CODE BLACK / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - the fire without flames

The smoke was white, thin and controlled.

Arthur recognized it immediately as a security smoke system, not a fire.

Someone had activated the greenhouse emergency unit to obscure the west cameras.

Mara zoomed in using a drone positioned beyond the estate boundary.

A figure moved through the smoke carrying a metal case.

“Richard?” Daniel asked.

“No,” Arthur said.

The person was shorter and wore a long dark coat.

The drone shifted position, but the smoke hid the figure’s face. Arthur saw only one detail before the person reached a black sedan near the service road.

A silver ring.

The Vale crest flashed in the sunlight.

Mara sent the vehicle registration through a database.

“Plates belong to Dr. Nolan Reed.”

The sedan accelerated away from the estate.

Arthur made a decision.

“Track it. Do not intercept.”

Mara sent one of the response vehicles after the sedan.

Daniel checked the time.

“The hearing begins in ninety minutes.”

Arthur looked at the live signals from the mansion.

“Where is Lily?”

“Second floor, east side. Her emergency bracelet is still transmitting.”

Arthur had given Lily the bracelet two years earlier after she became separated from Eleanor at a crowded museum. It appeared to be a simple silver band, but it contained a low-power distress signal.

Richard knew nothing about it.

Mara placed the signal over the mansion map.

“She’s moving.”

The dot traveled through the second-floor corridor, descended a staircase and stopped near the kitchen.

“Sofia got her out of the locked room.”

Arthur allowed himself one breath of relief.

Then another signal appeared beside Lily.

Mara frowned.

“That is impossible.”

“What?”

“Someone activated a second Meridian family beacon.”

Only members of Arthur’s immediate family possessed those devices.

Arthur wore one inside his watch.

Lily wore one in her bracelet.

Claire’s beacon had been destroyed in the car accident that killed her.

The signal moved behind the walls toward the blue room.

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“Could Richard have copied it?”

“No. The beacon contains a physical encryption core.”

“Then whose is it?”

Arthur did not answer.

He remembered the photograph, the silver ring and the message warning him to cooperate.

Mara enlarged the beacon record.

“The identification code is damaged, but the original registration begins with C.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

Claire.

It was not proof that she was alive. Her device could have been stolen before the accident. Someone could be using it to manipulate him.

Yet the signal was moving through a corridor only the Vale family knew existed.

Arthur’s phone rang.

Sofia spoke quickly.

“Lily is with me. Richard is looking for her.”

“Get to the kitchen exit.”

“The guards are outside.”

“Stay inside. We will not force an extraction while the order remains active unless she faces immediate danger.”

Lily took the phone.

“Dad, the woman from the blue room left.”

“Did you see her face?”

“No. She stood behind the screen.”

“What screen?”

“The one with flowers. Richard told me not to look.”

“Did she speak to you?”

“Yes.”

Arthur glanced at Mara, who began recording.

“What did she say?”

“She said I had to help save our family.”

“How?”

“She wanted me to tell the judge you scared me.”

“And when you refused?”

Lily became quiet.

Arthur lowered his voice.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“She said you would disappear like Mom.”

Every person in the vehicle stopped moving.

Arthur struggled to keep his tone calm.

“Did she say anything else?”

“She knew the song Mom used to sing.”

A cold pressure settled in Arthur’s chest.

Very few people knew that song. Claire had written it for Lily when she was a baby and had never recorded it publicly.

“Lily, can you remember the woman’s voice?”

“It sounded like Mom.”

Arthur closed his eyes for one second.

The line crackled.

Sofia said, “Richard is coming.”

“Hide the phone and stay with Sofia.”

“I love you, Dad.”

“I love you more.”

The call ended.

Daniel spoke carefully.

“Grief can affect how a child remembers voices.”

“I know.”

“You cannot take this into court without evidence.”

“I know.”

Mara’s screen flashed.

The team following Dr. Reed’s car had sent an update. The sedan had stopped beneath an overpass. Reed exited, opened the metal case and attempted to destroy several storage drives.

Meridian’s observers recorded everything from a distance.

Then another vehicle arrived.

A woman stepped out.

Her face remained hidden beneath a wide hat, but when Reed handed her the final drive, she removed one glove.

A silver crest ring circled her finger.

Mara froze the image.

Arthur stared at the woman’s hand.

Beneath the ring was a narrow scar extending toward the wrist.

Claire had received the same scar at seventeen when a kitchen window shattered during a storm.

Arthur reached toward the screen.

The woman entered the second vehicle and disappeared before the team could identify her.

Daniel closed the court file.

“We have to go.”

Arthur looked toward the mansion where Lily remained under a fraudulent order, then toward the road where a woman with Claire’s hand had just vanished.

For the first time since receiving Lily’s call, Arthur understood that Richard might not be the most dangerous person involved.

He might only be the person left behind to take the blame.
