Chapter 13 - the house without shadows

Arthur did not bring Lily to the Rain House.
He brought an empty vehicle broadcasting her bracelet signal.
Lily remained at a secure location known only to Mara and a federal judge who had been personally verified.
Arthur traveled to the desert with a small team that had no access to the full operation plan. Daniel remained behind to continue the custody case and prepare criminal charges against Richard.
A storm followed them across the highway.
The Rain House stood alone among the rocks, a circle of glass and pale stone surrounded by channels designed to collect water. When rain struck the curved roof, it flowed evenly around the building, eliminating fixed shadows beneath the exterior walls.
Arthur’s father had called it an architectural experiment.
Claire had turned it into a hiding place.
The front door opened before Arthur reached it.
A recorded voice spoke from hidden speakers.
“Come inside alone.”
Arthur entered.
The interior contained no furniture except a long table. On it rested the black ledger shown in the video.
Arthur did not touch it.
“Claire?”
A woman stepped from behind a glass partition.
She had Claire’s height, Claire’s dark hair and Claire’s scar.
But her face was covered by a thin black veil.
Arthur remained near the doorway.
“Remove it.”
“I can’t.”
“Then tell me something only Claire would know.”
The woman hummed the first line of Lily’s song.
“That is not enough.”
She spoke softly.
“On the night Lily was born, you were so frightened that you entered the wrong hospital room and apologized to a sleeping man for ten minutes.”
Arthur’s chest tightened.
Only Claire knew that.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
“Because I discovered Lazarus had survived inside Meridian.”
“You could have told me.”
“I did not know whether you were part of it.”
Arthur stared at her.
“You believed I might use our daughter?”
“I believed your father might have built something into Code Black that you could not control.”
“Remove the veil.”
Claire lifted her hands but stopped.
A red light appeared beneath the table.
“Your mother is watching.”
“Where is she?”
“Everywhere the old Meridian network reaches.”
“You stood behind the screen while Richard frightened Lily.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“I believed I could control him.”
“You listened while our daughter begged to leave.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to ask for forgiveness before you explain why.”
“I am not asking for forgiveness.”
“Then what are you asking for?”
“Help destroying the Ledger.”
Arthur glanced at the black object on the table.
“That is the master index?”
“No. It is bait.”
The glass walls suddenly darkened.
Mara’s voice came through Arthur’s earpiece.
“We lost visual contact.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Victoria wants you to open the real index. She cannot access it without Lily’s memory and your biometric authorization.”
“My mother is dead.”
“She faked her death before she taught me to fake mine.”
“Why?”
“Because Lazarus is not a list of criminals. It is a list of people who can be controlled.”
Arthur understood.
Secrets were more valuable than money. A hidden archive containing crimes, identities and private operations could be used to direct politicians, executives, judges and intelligence officers.
“Victoria does not want to release the Ledger,” Claire said. “She wants to inherit it.”
A lock engaged behind Arthur.
The false ledger on the table opened automatically.
Inside was a screen displaying Lily’s bedroom at the secure location.
Arthur’s pulse changed.
Lily sat safely beside Mara.
Then Mara turned toward the camera.
Her expression was tense.
A figure entered behind her.
Thomas Greer, Meridian’s former director.
Arthur had trusted him for fifteen years.
Thomas raised a weapon toward Mara.
The video had no sound.
Arthur reached for his phone.
Claire stopped him.
“If you trigger Code Black again, Victoria gains access to the final layer.”
“How?”
“Every activation sends your biometric command through the original network. She needs one more.”
Arthur stared at the screen.
Thomas moved closer to Lily.
Mara kept herself between them.
Arthur could save them by activating the system.
Doing so might also unlock Lazarus.
Claire whispered, “This is why she allowed you to rescue Lily. She wanted you to use Code Black.”
Arthur pressed his earpiece.
“Mara, confirm status.”
No answer.
Thomas touched Lily’s shoulder.
Arthur removed the black phone.
Claire grabbed his wrist.
“If you authorize it, my mother wins.”
On the screen, Lily looked directly into the hidden camera.
She raised one hand.
Arthur recognized the signal she made with her fingers.
Three taps against her wrist.
The family code for trust me.
Lily was not frightened.
Thomas was not holding a real weapon.
Mara suddenly turned, seized Thomas’s arm and pulled him off balance. Two agents entered and restrained him.
The feed went black.
Arthur looked at Claire.
“It was a test.”
“For whom?”
“You.”
Claire stepped back.
Arthur lifted the satellite phone but did not activate it.
“My team found Thomas before we arrived. Mara used him to see whether the Rain House was monitoring Lily’s location.”
Claire stared at him.
“You lied to me.”
“You allowed our daughter to believe I abandoned her.”
The darkened glass became transparent again.
Outside, vehicles surrounded the Rain House.
Arthur continued.
“Richard is in custody. Dr. Reed confessed. The court restored Lily to me. Your operation is finished.”
Claire looked toward the approaching agents.
“No. It has only reached the point Victoria planned.”
A section of the floor opened beneath the table.
Claire pushed Arthur away as the false ledger disappeared into the shaft.
An alarm sounded.
Arthur caught her arm before she could follow it.
The veil fell from her face.
It was Claire.
Older, exhausted and alive.
May you like
She looked at him for one painful second.
Then an explosion shook the ground beneath the house.
