Chapter 8 - Everything They Never Paid For
The family moved into a private conference room.
Juliet sat at the head of the table.
For the first time, Malcolm sat across from her.
Samuel distributed account summaries.
Beatrice’s face tightened as the numbers appeared.
Spa services, dining, suites, marina rentals, private drivers, gift purchases, staff overtime, event security, and property damage.
Her total balance was one million, two hundred and forty thousand dollars.
Malcolm’s brother owed nine hundred and twelve thousand.
Other relatives owed smaller amounts, although none were truly small.
Malcolm turned page after page.
“How did this happen?”
“You approved unlimited family privileges,” Juliet said. “Beatrice expanded them. Managers hid the expenses because they were afraid.”
Beatrice pushed her papers away.
“These charges are invented.”
The financial director entered with signed receipts, security logs, reservation records, and internal messages.
Each document carried dates and authorizations.
One message from Beatrice read, Put it under marketing. Malcolm never checks.
Malcolm stared at the sentence.
Beatrice’s confidence finally cracked.
“I was protecting the family image.”
“You were protecting your lifestyle,” Juliet replied.
Malcolm looked at his daughter.
“What do you intend to do?”
“Every relative will sign a repayment agreement or leave the property today.”
“You would throw out your own family?”
“I would remove guests who refuse to pay.”
Beatrice stood.
“I am your father’s wife.”
“That does not make you an owner.”
“I helped build this place.”
“You removed my mother’s name from rooms she designed.”
Beatrice’s eyes narrowed.
“She was gone.”
Juliet’s expression remained calm.
“That was your greatest mistake. You believed being gone meant being powerless.”
Samuel placed Evelyn’s original plans on the table.
