Chapter 2 - A Resort Built on Unpaid Bills
The resort looked perfect from the lobby.
Behind the office doors, it was drowning.
Juliet spent two weeks studying invoices, payroll reports, supplier contracts, and guest accounts. The problems were worse than she expected.
Malcolm’s relatives had treated the resort like their private home.
They stayed in lake villas without paying. They ordered expensive wine under family privileges. They held birthday parties, engagement dinners, and business events without deposits.
Beatrice had used the spa almost every day for four years. She brought friends, influencers, distant cousins, and personal assistants. Every treatment was marked complimentary.
The total exceeded six hundred thousand dollars.
That was only the spa.
Malcolm’s brother owed nearly nine hundred thousand dollars for corporate conferences. His niece had charged a wedding celebration to an internal promotional account. Beatrice’s son from her first marriage had used resort vehicles, staff members, and security teams for private events.
Meanwhile, ordinary employees were being told to wait for overtime payments.
Suppliers had begun demanding cash before delivery.
The bank had warned Malcolm that another missed payment could trigger a review of the resort’s ownership and debt structure.
Juliet closed the final account report and looked at the financial director.
“How long have you known?”
The man swallowed.
“Almost two years.”
“Why didn’t you stop it?”
“Mr. Beaumont approved the privileges.”
“My father approved free rooms. He did not approve falsified invoices.”
The director looked toward the door.
“Mrs. Beaumont said anyone who questioned her family would be fired.”
Juliet felt anger rising inside her, but she kept her voice steady.
“Has anyone been fired?”
“Seven people.”
“For refusing false charges?”
“Yes.”
Juliet wrote down every name.
