Chapter 1 - The Daughter Who Did Not Belong
Three months earlier, Juliet Beaumont arrived at the resort through the employee entrance.
The Beaumont Lake Resort stood beside a private lake in northern New York. It had marble floors, glass elevators, imported chandeliers, luxury villas, and a spa famous among politicians, actors, and business executives.
To the public, Malcolm Beaumont owned everything.
His photographs appeared in magazines. His name was printed on invitations. At charity dinners, guests congratulated him for building a family empire.
But the resort had not begun with Malcolm.
It had begun with Juliet’s mother, Evelyn.
Evelyn had inherited the lakeside land from her grandfather. She had transformed a fading country inn into an exclusive resort, working sixteen-hour days while Malcolm handled public relations.
When Juliet was seventeen, Evelyn died after a sudden illness.
Within a year, Malcolm married Beatrice.
Beatrice moved into the family estate, redesigned Evelyn’s office, removed her portraits from the hallways, and began introducing herself as the woman behind the Beaumont legacy.
Juliet was sent away to university.
Whenever she returned, Beatrice reminded her that she was merely Malcolm’s daughter.
“The resort needs adults who understand business,” Beatrice once told her. “Not emotional children protecting memories.”
Juliet did not argue.
She studied finance, hotel management, and commercial law. She completed internships under a different surname so no one would treat her as an heiress. She learned how to read contracts, trace payments, negotiate loans, and recognize the quiet signs of a company approaching collapse.
At twenty-nine, Juliet returned to Beaumont Lake.
She did not announce herself to the guests.
She entered through the back, greeted the kitchen staff by name, and asked to see the financial records.
