Chapter 3 - Evelyn’s Final Protection

Malcolm believed he controlled the resort because he had served as its public chairman for twenty years.

He had never read Evelyn’s complete estate agreement.

Juliet found it inside a secure legal archive.

The document had been prepared six months before Evelyn’s death. It transferred the land, trademarks, resort buildings, and controlling shares into the Evelyn Beaumont Heritage Trust.

Malcolm was appointed temporary managing trustee.

Juliet was named the permanent controlling beneficiary.

Her authority would activate on her twenty-ninth birthday or earlier if the resort entered financial danger.

Juliet’s birthday had passed four months ago.

The bank warning had activated the second condition even sooner.

Legally, Juliet had controlled the resort for nearly a year.

Malcolm had never been the true owner.

He had only been the caretaker.

Evelyn’s attorney, Samuel Harris, met Juliet in a quiet restaurant outside town.

“I tried to contact your father,” he explained. “Beatrice refused every meeting. She claimed Malcolm had complete authority.”

“Did my father know about the trust?”

“He knew your mother created one. I don’t believe he understood its restrictions.”

Juliet looked through the documents.

“Can I revoke family privileges?”

“You can revoke every privilege, remove managers, demand payment, and replace the board.”

“Can I sell the resort?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Yes.”

Juliet stared through the restaurant window at the distant lake.

Selling would be easy. The land alone was worth a fortune. Several hotel corporations would compete for it.

But thousands of memories lived inside the resort.

Her mother had chosen every stone in the original lobby. She had planted the gardens with the staff. She had created a scholarship fund for employees’ children.

Juliet did not want to destroy Evelyn’s work.

She wanted to rescue it.

“What happens if the family refuses to pay?” Juliet asked.

“Then they become ordinary debtors.”

May you like

A faint smile appeared on Juliet’s face.

“That may be the first ordinary thing they’ve experienced in years.”
