Chapter 8 - the bride’s unsigned name

Mara ran from Room 1208 before Daniel could stop her.

Detective Ortiz radioed the officers downstairs, but no one responded. The elevator seemed to descend too slowly, every passing floor increasing Mara’s fear.

When the doors opened, the private lounge was empty.

Claire’s bouquet lay on the floor.

One police radio rested beside it, producing only static.

“Lily!” Mara shouted.

A faint knocking came from behind a wall panel.

Daniel found the release catch and opened a service cupboard.

Claire and Lily were inside with the two officers. Someone had locked them in from the outside after releasing a chemical fire suppressant into the hallway. The officers were disoriented but conscious.

Mara pulled Lily into her arms.

“I knew you would find us,” Lily said.

Claire leaned against the wall.

“Adrian came here.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No. He wanted me to sign the agreement.”

“Did you?”

Claire reached beneath her wedding gown and removed several folded pages.

“I pretended to.”

She had written her name on the final page, but she had used the surname Hart instead of Preston and added the time beside it.

The agreement required her legal married name and could not become effective before the ceremony.

“It isn’t valid,” Daniel said.

“I wanted him to believe it was.”

Claire opened her hand.

Inside was the brass key.

“I took this from his pocket when he hugged me.”

For the first time that day, Mara saw something stronger than heartbreak in her sister’s expression.

“Where is Adrian?” Daniel asked.

“He said he had to meet our mother beneath the ballroom.”

Eleanor was brought downstairs in a wheelchair accompanied by paramedics and police. When she saw Claire holding the key, she closed her eyes.

“You should never have touched that.”

Claire faced her.

“You helped him frame Lily.”

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“I thought the phone contained the archive code. Adrian said Lily had taken it.”

“So you put another phone in her pocket?”

“I believed he would frighten her into giving back the first device.”

“You told him to make it convincing.”

“I didn’t know he would strike her.”

Mara stepped between Eleanor and Lily.

“You decided terrorizing your granddaughter was acceptable.”

“I was trying to keep all of you alive.”

Daniel held up the photograph from Room 1208.

“Who is the man with Dad’s ring?”

Eleanor looked at it.

“Jonathan contacted me six months after the accident.”

Mara felt as though the floor had shifted.

“You knew he survived?”

“He said the crash had been staged because people were trying to take control of the trust. He promised to return when it was safe.”

“You let us mourn him for twelve years.”

“I received messages for two years. Then they stopped. After that, another man began using his passwords and sending photographs.”

“Why didn’t you call the police?”

“The first photograph showed you taking Lily home from the hospital. The message said that if I spoke, you would never reach the car.”

Mara pulled Lily closer.

Eleanor continued.

“Adrian appeared last year. He said Jonathan was alive and that the marriage would bring him home. He wanted Claire’s signature and the brass key.”

“Why did you believe him?”

“Because he knew what was in the archive.”

Daniel looked toward the ballroom floor.

“What is in there?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Not money. Not property deeds. Names.”

“Whose names?”

“People your father protected. Judges, officers, accountants and witnesses who helped him uncover a financial network operating through luxury hotels.”

Felix entered the lounge carrying a portable computer.

“I recovered part of the deleted ballroom video.”

The image showed Adrian and Eleanor planting the phone.

Then a third person entered the edge of the frame.

A woman wearing a hotel photographer’s badge gave Adrian a signal.

Lily pointed at her.

“That’s the voice from the phone.”

The woman’s face turned toward the camera.

Claire whispered her name.

“Simone Voss.”

Simone was the wedding planner who had arranged every entrance, assigned every staff member and selected every camera position.

Felix searched the event records.

Simone had left the hotel twelve minutes earlier.

She had taken Adrian’s legal files, the missing security operator and a black case from the wedding office.

The case was registered to Jonathan Hart.
