Chapter 7 - room 1208

Police sealed the ballroom and began interviewing guests.

Adrian was separated from Claire, but he had not been arrested. His lawyer insisted that the footage had vanished before officers authenticated it and that the planted phone could have been placed by anyone.

Daniel wanted to argue.

Mara stopped him.

“Room 1208,” she said quietly.

Felix heard her.

“That room doesn’t exist.”

“The message says it does.”

“The twelfth floor ends at 1206. The space beyond it has been used for mechanical storage since the west renovation.”

Daniel looked toward the elevator.

“Then that’s where we’re going.”

A detective named Lena Ortiz refused to allow them to investigate alone. She assigned two officers to accompany Mara, Daniel and Felix while Claire remained with Lily in a private lounge guarded by police.

Mara hated leaving her daughter, but the message had mentioned Lily specifically.

Someone believed the child possessed something they wanted.

The twelfth-floor corridor was quieter than the ballroom.

Felix led them past Rooms 1202, 1204 and 1206. At the end of the hallway stood a decorative mirror between two wall lamps.

“There should be a storage door here,” he said.

Daniel examined the mirror.

Fresh scratches marked the marble floor beneath it.

Together, he and Felix pushed the frame aside.

A narrow steel door appeared.

Its electronic panel displayed four numbers.

1208.

Felix’s master keycard did not work.

Daniel entered Jonathan Hart’s birthday.

The light remained red.

Mara tried the date of her father’s supposed accident.

The lock clicked.

The room beyond was not a storage area.

It was a private suite.

Someone had been living there.

A gray jacket hung over a chair. A cup of coffee remained warm beside the window. On the desk sat maps of the hotel, photographs of the Hart family and printed copies of Claire and Adrian’s wedding schedule.

One image showed Lily entering school.

Another showed Mara leaving her apartment.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“This has been happening for months.”

Detective Ortiz ordered an officer to search the adjoining rooms.

Mara approached the desk.

A file bearing Claire’s name contained the continuity agreement. Several pages had been inserted behind the harmless medical-authority clauses.

Those hidden pages transferred temporary voting control of the Hart trust to Adrian immediately after the wedding.

Claire’s signature had already been forged.

Felix found a row of wedding vendor invoices.

Each company had charged the hotel hundreds of thousands of dollars. The addresses led to empty offices or abandoned warehouses.

“Adrian has been using the wedding to drain the hotel,” Daniel said.

Mara opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor meeting Adrian in the hotel chapel two months earlier. Eleanor was handing him the brass key.

A second photograph showed her receiving an envelope of cash.

“She sold us,” Mara whispered.

Daniel looked closer.

“No. Look at her face.”

Eleanor was not watching the money.

She was staring past Adrian toward someone outside the frame.

The next photograph revealed that person.

A tall man stood near the chapel doors. His face was hidden by the reflection of stained glass, but Jonathan Hart’s signet ring was visible on his hand.

Detective Ortiz opened a closet.

Eleanor fell forward into her arms.

Mara rushed to her.

Eleanor was conscious but weak. A bruise marked her temple, and her silver bracelet was missing.

“He took the key,” Eleanor whispered.

“Who?”

“The man Adrian works for.”

Daniel knelt beside her.

“Was it Dad?”

Eleanor began crying.

“I don’t know anymore.”

The lights in Room 1208 flickered.

A television mounted on the wall turned on by itself.

Jonathan Hart appeared on the screen.

The recording showed him sitting in the private archive beneath the ballroom. The date in the corner was three days after his reported death.

“If my children are seeing this,” Jonathan said, “then Adrian Preston has reached the hotel.”

Mara moved closer.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

“Do not trust the person who brought Daniel back.”

The video ended.

Daniel reached for his phone.

The anonymous message that had summoned him to the wedding had changed.

The photograph was gone.

In its place was a live image of Claire and Lily sitting in the private lounge downstairs.

Someone was watching them through the ceiling camera.
