Chapter 14 - the man visible only on camera

On the monitor, the man stood beside Mara.

In the actual room, the space was empty.

Lily moved closer to the screen.

“He isn’t here now.”

Felix replayed the feed.

The timestamp was live, but the image contained details that no longer existed. Claire’s wedding veil lay across the desk, although she had left it downstairs. Adrian’s brass key hung from the lamp.

“It’s a constructed feed,” Daniel said. “Someone is layering old images over the live camera.”

The man turned toward the lens.

Jonathan Hart’s face appeared clearly for the first time.

He looked older than in Mara’s memories. His hair had turned gray, and a scar crossed the side of his neck. But his eyes were the same.

“Mara,” he said through the camera. “Daniel. Claire.”

The siblings stood together before the monitor.

“If you are watching this, Adrian has failed and Simone has begun the second operation.”

Mara stepped toward the screen.

“Where are you?”

The recording continued without responding.

“I know you believe I abandoned you. Some of what you believe is true. Some of it was created to keep you predictable.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You used Lily.”

Jonathan’s image paused as though the system had heard him.

Then the man on the screen looked directly toward Daniel.

“Yes.”

The answer had not been part of a simple recording.

Jonathan was communicating through a delayed interactive system.

Mara moved in front of the camera.

“If you are alive, come here.”

“I cannot.”

“You mean you will not.”

“Simone is searching for the final archive.”

“We found the archive.”

“No. You found what I wanted Adrian to find.”

A digital map appeared on the screen.

It showed the Ashbourne Grand and twelve other hotels across the country.

Each contained a hidden storage system connected to the Meridian Circle.

“The names in Ashbourne are only a directory,” Jonathan explained. “The evidence is distributed. Simone has spent years identifying the locations.”

“Is she working for you?” Claire asked.

“She was.”

“And Adrian?”

“A useful man who mistook access for power.”

Mara’s anger overcame her fear.

“You allowed him near Claire. You allowed him to frame Lily.”

“I designed a test. Adrian changed it.”

“A test for an eight-year-old?”

“A test for all of you.”

Daniel struck the desk.

“We are not pieces on your board.”

Jonathan looked almost regretful.

“That is what I hoped you would prove.”

The screen displayed a live image from the hotel roof.

Simone stood beside the ledge holding the missing black case.

Police began moving upstairs.

“She has the directory,” Jonathan said. “If she leaves the hotel, hundreds of protected identities will be exposed.”

“Then tell us how to stop her,” Mara said.

“Lily already knows.”

Everyone turned toward the child.

Lily studied the rooftop image.

“The wind is wrong.”

Felix looked confused.

“What?”

“The flags are moving to the left, but the trees behind the hotel are moving to the right.”

Daniel understood.

“The rooftop feed is another loop.”

Lily pointed at a reflection in the black case.

A brass chandelier appeared on its polished surface.

Simone was not on the roof.

She was still inside the hotel.

The chandelier belonged to the old west dining hall, closed since Jonathan’s death.

Police surrounded the hall.

Simone was found inside with the black case and the missing security operator, who was frightened but unharmed.

She did not resist arrest.

As Detective Ortiz placed restraints around her wrists, Simone looked at Lily.

“You really do see what he saw.”

Mara stood between them.

“You will never speak to my daughter again.”

Simone smiled faintly.

“You still think Jonathan chose her.”

“Didn’t he?”

“No.”

Simone nodded toward Eleanor.

“Ask your mother who selected Lily before Jonathan even knew she existed.”

Eleanor’s face lost all color.

Simone was taken away.

Before leaving, she looked over her shoulder.

“The wedding was Adrian’s plan. Lily was Eleanor’s.”
