Chapter 10 - the archive inside the elevator

The private elevator opened directly behind the wedding stage.

Police surrounded it with weapons lowered but ready.

No one was inside.

Instead of a passenger cabin, the elevator contained a narrow steel compartment filled with filing drawers, old computer servers and sealed evidence cases.

Felix stared at the machinery.

“Jonathan built the archive into the freight system.”

Daniel stepped inside.

The compartment could move between hidden access points throughout the hotel. It explained how confidential records had survived the supposed flood and why no one had found the room.

Claire held up the brass key.

A matching keyhole was set into the control panel.

Eleanor became agitated when she saw it.

“Don’t turn that.”

“Why?” Mara asked.

“Because Jonathan told me the key would release everything.”

“Everything to whom?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel examined the drawers.

Most required biometric access. One was labeled HART SUCCESSION.

Claire inserted the brass key but did not turn it.

Adrian was brought into the ballroom under police guard.

When he saw the archive, he stopped walking.

“Close it,” he said.

Detective Ortiz faced him.

“You wanted the key. Now you can explain why.”

“Simone is waiting for someone to activate the system.”

“Who?”

Adrian looked at the guests still gathered at the far end of the ballroom.

“She could be anyone now.”

Felix checked the event staff exits.

No photographer matching Simone’s description remained inside. However, several guests had changed clothing after drinks were spilled during the blackout.

Mara studied every face.

Friends, business partners, hotel investors and distant relatives watched from beneath the restored chandeliers. Any one of them might have helped Simone.

Lily tugged Mara’s hand.

“She isn’t wearing the red dress anymore.”

“How do you know?”

“I saw her in the mirror.”

“What mirror?”

“The big one behind Grandma during the video.”

Felix reopened the recovered footage.

While Adrian and Eleanor planted the phone, a decorative mirror reflected the edge of the ballroom entrance.

Simone stood there in her red event-planner dress.

Then she removed the red outer layer.

Underneath, she wore a black service uniform.

Felix enlarged the image.

A gold hotel badge was pinned to her chest.

“She’s dressed as senior staff,” he said.

Mara looked toward the employees controlling the crowd.

One woman stood near the main doors with her back turned.

Her hair was hidden beneath a hotel cap.

“Daniel.”

He followed Mara’s gaze.

The woman sensed them looking and ran.

Police chased her into the lobby.

She overturned a serving cart, creating a barrier, then disappeared into a crowd of arriving emergency personnel.

Daniel followed her through the revolving doors.

Outside, Simone reached a black car waiting at the curb.

The rear door opened.

Before she entered, she looked back at Daniel and smiled.

An older man sat inside the vehicle.

Daniel saw only his profile, but he recognized the scar above the man’s eyebrow.

Jonathan had received that scar when Daniel was a child.

“Dad!”

The older man turned.

The car pulled away.

Daniel photographed the license plate and sent it to Detective Ortiz. The number belonged to a vehicle owned by a federal judge named Marcus Vale.

Judge Vale had signed the original accident report declaring Jonathan Hart dead.

Inside the ballroom, Adrian became pale when he heard the judge’s name.

“You don’t understand,” he said. “Vale doesn’t work for Simone.”

“Who does he work for?” Mara demanded.

Adrian looked at Lily.

“For the person your daughter heard inside the elevator.”

Lily shook her head.

“There was only a woman.”

“No,” Adrian said. “The woman was answering someone.”

He pointed to the cracked phone Daniel had found.

“The first recording has another channel. Reverse the audio.”

Felix restored the file and played it backward through a filtering program.

Beneath Adrian and Simone’s conversation, a third voice emerged.

Jonathan Hart’s voice.

“Once the phone is on Lily, Mara will call the police. The cameras will expose Adrian, and the family will open the archive for us.”

Mara felt the truth settle around her.

The entire confrontation had been designed to lead them to the archive.
