Chapter 9 - The Apologies
Six months later, Ethan asked to meet Claire at a quiet café.
He looked different without expensive clothes and practiced confidence.
“I was jealous of you,” he admitted.
Claire stirred her coffee.
“You helped Dad access my account.”
“I know.”
“You watched them disown me.”
“I know that too.”
Ethan did not offer an excuse.
He explained that he had spent years believing he deserved the same success Claire had earned. Whenever he failed, their parents protected him. Whenever Claire succeeded, they acted as though her achievements belonged to everyone.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said. “I wanted to tell you I’m sorry without asking you to fix anything.”
Claire appreciated the distinction.
“I’m not ready to trust you.”
“You shouldn’t be.”
She did not forgive him that day, but she agreed that he could contact her again after completing the financial responsibility program required by the court.
Diane’s apology arrived several weeks later in a handwritten letter.
She admitted that she had treated Claire’s reliability as permission to demand more. She had allowed Richard to control the family story because confronting the truth would have required changing her lifestyle.
Claire read the letter twice.
Then she placed it in a drawer.
Some apologies opened doors.
Others simply closed wounds.
Richard sent no apology.
