The first payment failure occurred on Monday morning.
Diane called Claire seven times before leaving a message.
“There appears to be a problem with the mortgage. Call me immediately.”
Claire did not answer.
By Tuesday, Ethan’s vehicle company had notified him that the automatic payment had failed.
He sent Claire an angry text.
You canceled my car payment over a family disagreement?
Claire replied with one sentence.
I understood that I was no longer family.
Ethan called her selfish.
An hour later, the internet service sent Richard a payment reminder. The household maintenance company suspended its premium plan. Diane discovered her private club membership had not been renewed.
The Bennett lifestyle began collapsing with surprising speed.
Richard initially assured everyone he would handle it.
However, his retirement savings were far smaller than Diane and Ethan believed. His logistics company had not been sold at a magnificent profit, as he often implied. It had closed under heavy debt.
The coastal home carried a significant mortgage.
Richard had concealed the truth for years because Claire’s monthly support allowed him to maintain the illusion of wealth.
Now that illusion had an expiration date.
Diane searched through drawers, expecting to find investment documents.
Instead, she found overdue notices.
When she confronted Richard, he blamed Claire.
“She created this crisis to punish us.”
