Chapter 3 - The Family Vote
During the following week, Diane called Claire repeatedly.
Each conversation began gently and ended with an accusation.
“Ethan feels humiliated.”
“Your father thinks success changed you.”
“You have more than enough money.”
Claire offered the same solution every time. She would fund a professional review and help Ethan develop a realistic business plan.
They rejected the offer.
On Friday evening, Claire received a message asking her to come to the family home for an important discussion.
When she arrived, Richard, Diane, and Ethan were already seated in the living room.
No one offered her coffee.
Richard spoke first.
“This family cannot continue tolerating your disrespect.”
Claire remained standing.
“What disrespect?”
“You embarrassed your brother and questioned my judgment.”
“I refused to hand Ethan two hundred thousand dollars without basic financial controls.”
Diane crossed her arms.
“That response proves our point.”
Ethan remained silent, but his expression carried quiet satisfaction.
Richard lifted a printed document from the table.
“We’ve decided that until you learn to respect this family, you are no longer welcome here.”
Claire stared at him.
“You’re disowning me because I won’t finance Ethan’s idea?”
“We’re protecting our family from your toxic influence,” Diane said.
Claire waited for someone to reconsider.
No one did.
She picked up her handbag and walked to the door.
Before leaving, she turned back.
“Does this decision include everything I provide?”
Richard frowned.
“Don’t be childish.”
