Chapter 7 - Evidence in the Living Room

After Claire announced the attempted transfer, no one spoke.
Richard recovered first.
“It must be a banking error.”
Claire held his gaze.
“The request came from your device.”
“You gave me access.”
“For household emergencies, not personal transfers.”
Diane looked between them.
“Richard, what did you do?”
He turned toward her sharply.
“Nothing. Claire is manipulating the situation.”
Claire opened another screen.
“I also have the requests to increase my transfer limit.”
Ethan gripped the railing.
Claire noticed.
“Ethan?”
His mouth opened, but Richard interrupted.
“Do not involve your brother.”
That response confirmed Claire’s suspicions.
She walked toward the door, but Diane followed.
“Claire, please. We can discuss this privately.”
“We are discussing it privately.”
“You don’t understand what will happen if the mortgage isn’t paid.”
“I understand exactly what will happen. The people who own this house will become responsible for it.”
Diane flinched.
Claire’s voice softened, but not from weakness.
“You disowned me while expecting my money to remain part of the family.”
Richard pointed toward the door.
“Leave.”
Claire almost laughed.
“That was already the plan.”
She stepped outside and found two bank investigators waiting in a parked car across the street. Claire had agreed to meet them after confronting her family.

Richard saw them through the window.
For the first time, his commanding expression disappeared completely.
