Chapter 7 - the confession made for only one man

Celeste was arrested at the train station four minutes before departure.
She did not resist.
When officers approached, she placed her suitcase on the floor and lifted her hands as if she had expected them.
Dr. Keene was not with her.
The suitcase contained cash, two passports, and medication used to sedate children.
That discovery transformed the investigation.
Celeste was charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and several financial crimes connected to the records found in box 417.
Yet even from the interrogation room, she maintained one claim.
“I did not switch the babies.”
At the mansion, Oliver slept in Nora’s room while a doctor examined him. He had not been given any medication and showed no physical injuries.
Adrian watched the flash drive in the security office with Nora and Detective Chen.
The video had been recorded seven years earlier.
Celeste sat in a hotel room wearing a gray coat. She looked younger and exhausted.
“If you are watching this, Adrian,” she began, “then someone has found the boxes.”
Adrian leaned closer.
Celeste continued.
“You will blame me because that is what Lydia intended. She never trusted me. She believed I wanted her inheritance, and eventually I did. But I did not begin this.”
The screen flickered.
“On the night the children were born, Lydia’s son died before Dr. Keene could stabilize him. Your father learned about it before you did.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“My father was in Geneva.”
“That is what he wanted you to believe,” Celeste said from the recording. “He returned through a private airport. He knew Lydia’s death would trigger an audit of the Ashbourne trust. If the child was also dead, control of several companies would leave the Vale family.”
Nora looked at Adrian.
He did not move.
Celeste’s recorded voice continued.
“Your father ordered Keene to find a replacement child. Evelyn Ross identified a suitable newborn delivered five minutes later. Nora Bennett’s son.”
Nora’s nails pressed into her palms.
“He paid me to keep Lydia calm and remove her original bracelet,” Celeste said. “I agreed because my father’s company was collapsing and because I hated Lydia for receiving everything I believed should have been mine. I told myself the other child would grow up wealthy. I told myself his mother would survive the loss.”
Her eyes on the screen filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“I was wrong.”
“Convenient remorse,” Detective Chen said.
The video continued.
“Samuel Bennett discovered part of the truth. Edwin Price arranged the warehouse meeting to frighten him. Something went wrong. I was told Samuel died.”
Nora stepped closer to the monitor.
“What went wrong?” she whispered.
Celeste did not answer her from the past.
Instead, she leaned toward the camera.
“Adrian, your father made you Oliver’s guardian because he knew the child was not yours. You were never meant to discover it. I married you to protect myself and to preserve my claim to the trust. But over time, the plan changed.”
The screen showed Celeste holding a folder.
“Your father died believing the secret was safe. It was not. Edwin kept copies. Dr. Keene kept blood samples. Samuel may have kept more.”
Celeste paused.
“If Nora has returned, she already knows Oliver is hers. What she does not know is why Samuel chose that hospital.”
Nora stopped breathing.
The image cut to black.
The video ended.
Detective Chen removed the flash drive.
“Celeste created that recording as insurance.”
“Against whom?” Adrian asked.
“Your father, Edwin Price, Dr. Keene, or anyone else involved.”
Nora stared at the dark screen.
“Samuel did not choose St. Catherine’s. It was the nearest hospital when my labor began.”
“Are you sure?” Adrian asked.
“He changed our route that night. He said the bridge was closed.”
Detective Chen opened a city traffic database.
“No closure was reported.”
Nora remembered Samuel gripping the steering wheel, glancing repeatedly in the mirror. She had assumed he was frightened about becoming a father.
What if he had been frightened for another reason?
Adrian called Edwin Price.
The attorney’s assistant said he had not arrived at the office.
His private plane had departed ninety minutes earlier.
The flight plan listed Zurich.
Detective Chen contacted federal authorities.
Then Adrian received a message from an unknown number.
The message contained a photograph.
Edwin Price sat inside a private aircraft, unconscious or asleep. Across from him was Dr. Keene.
A third person’s hand held the camera.
The smallest finger was missing its tip.
Beneath the image were six words.
You found the wrong box first.
Nora stared at the hand.
“Samuel.”

Another message arrived.
Box 418 was never empty.
