WHY IS HE CALLING HER MOMMY? / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - the bank that remembered every lie

At eight the next morning, Adrian, Nora, Detective Chen, and two officers entered First Dominion Bank through a private security entrance.

Oliver remained at the mansion with Mrs. Greer and a child-services specialist. He had cried when Nora left, so she promised she would return before lunch.

Celeste was still under investigation for assault, but Detective Chen did not yet have enough evidence to arrest her for kidnapping.

The bank manager, Thomas Weller, met them in a windowless conference room.

He was a thin man with silver glasses and a voice that shook whenever Adrian asked a question.

“Box 417 was opened under a thirty-year confidentiality agreement,” Weller said. “The original client name was protected by an executive seal.”

“Open it,” Adrian replied.

“I cannot do that without the registered key and proper identification.”

Nora placed the key on the table.

Weller did not look relieved.

“That satisfies one requirement.”

Detective Chen handed him a warrant.

“That satisfies the rest.”

The vault was located three floors below the main lobby.

Weller entered two codes, scanned his hand, and used a mechanical key. A circular steel door opened slowly.

Rows of numbered boxes lined the walls.

Box 417 was near the floor.

Nora knelt as Weller inserted the bank’s master key. She added the key hidden in the nursery.

Both turned together.

Inside was a long black container.

Weller carried it to a private viewing room and left under police supervision.

Detective Chen opened the container.

The first item was a hospital bracelet bearing Lydia Vale’s name.

The second was a bracelet marked BABY VALE.

The third was a small plastic bag containing strands of dark infant hair.

Beneath them lay two birth certificates.

Both documents listed the same child.

The first named him Elliot James Vale, son of Adrian and Lydia Vale.

A red stamp across the document read DECEASED.

The second named him Oliver Adrian Vale, son of Adrian and Lydia Vale.

It had been filed twenty-four hours later.

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“They killed one identity and created another.”

Detective Chen turned to the next folder.

Inside were payment records connecting Evelyn Ross, Dr. Keene, Edwin Price, and Arden Strategic Holdings.

There were also photographs.

One showed Celeste entering the hospital’s service corridor at 1:43 a.m.

Another showed Evelyn Ross carrying a bassinet toward an elevator at 2:26 a.m.

The child inside had a crescent mark behind his ear.

Nora gripped the table.

The final photograph showed Nora asleep in her hospital bed.

Beside her stood Dr. Keene with a syringe.

“Why would anyone photograph this?” Adrian asked.

“To guarantee everyone’s obedience,” Detective Chen replied. “Criminals often document their own operations when they need leverage over accomplices.”

Nora opened the last envelope.

A letter inside had been written by Lydia.

Adrian recognized her handwriting immediately.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, I was right to be afraid.

Celeste has been meeting Dr. Keene. She believes I do not know, but I heard them discussing the trust. My father’s amendment transfers control of the Ashbourne shares to my surviving child. If my child dies, the shares return to the Arden family through an agreement our parents made years ago.

Celeste thinks you married me for those shares. She does not understand that I would give them all away to keep our family safe.

If anything happens during the birth, do not trust the child’s records.

Trust the blood.

Lydia

Adrian lowered the letter.

Ashbourne Holdings was worth more than three billion dollars. Lydia’s shares had transferred to Oliver when she died, with Adrian serving as trustee until the boy turned twenty-five.

If Oliver was not Lydia’s biological child, his ownership could be challenged.

If Lydia’s real baby had died, the shares might legally belong to the Arden estate.

Celeste was the last surviving Arden heir.

“She replaced Lydia’s baby to keep the trust active,” Nora said slowly. “Then married you so she could control Oliver and the shares.”

Detective Chen nodded. “A living child was necessary. Your child became the substitute.”

Adrian stared at the photographs.

“And when Oliver turns twenty-five?”

“Celeste would need him to sign control over to her,” Nora replied.

“Or she would need him not to reach twenty-five,” Detective Chen said.

The room went silent.

Adrian immediately called the mansion.

Mrs. Greer answered.

Before he could speak, they heard shouting behind her.

Then breaking glass.

“Margaret,” Adrian demanded, “where is Oliver?”

Mrs. Greer’s frightened voice came through the phone.

“Celeste is gone.”

Nora stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

“What about Oliver?”

“He’s gone too.”
