Chapter 11 - the second name in the nursery records
The file labeled BABY BENNETT TWO contained no body and no medical samples.
Only documents.
The first page described a female infant born twenty-three minutes after Oliver.
Mother: Nora Bennett.
Father: Samuel Bennett.
Nora dropped the file.
“This is impossible.”
Adrian picked it up.
“Could the record belong to another woman with your name?”
“The date, hospital number, and address are mine.”
Nora pressed both hands against the table.
She remembered waking after delivery.
She remembered pain, confusion, and Dr. Keene telling her that her son had died.
She remembered asking to see Samuel.
A nurse told her he was speaking with hospital administrators.
She had no memory of delivering a second child.
Detective Chen called Dr. Keene from the archive.
At first, he refused to answer.
Then Nora took the phone.
“Was there another baby?”
Keene remained silent.
“Tell me.”
“You were carrying twins.”
The words struck harder than Celeste’s hand ever could.
Nora held the phone tighter.
“No doctor told me that.”
“The second child was concealed during your scans.”
“That makes no medical sense.”
“Your records were altered. Richard Vale’s group had been observing several pregnancies. Twins offered an alternative if one child did not survive.”
Adrian took the phone.
“What happened to the girl?”
“I do not know.”
“You delivered her.”
“She was delivered by Evelyn Ross after I left the room.”
“Where was Samuel?”
Keene’s breathing became uneven.
“He was there.”
Nora turned away.
The archive shelves blurred.
One stolen son.
One missing daughter.
Six years of believing she had lost everything when, in truth, the crime had been even larger.
Detective Chen searched the electronic files.
The female infant had been assigned the temporary name Clara.
Her transfer form listed Northbridge as the destination, but she had never arrived.
A security image from the hospital showed Evelyn Ross carrying a second bassinet into a service elevator.
Beside her stood Samuel.
He was not being threatened.
He was pushing the elevator button.
Nora stared at the photograph.
Adrian closed the folder.
“We do not know what happened before or after this image.”
“I know what it looks like.”
“So do I. That is not the same as knowing the truth.”
Nora laughed bitterly.
“You are defending him?”
“I am refusing to let another altered record decide everything.”
They searched until evening.
In a hidden drawer beneath the archive desk, Nora found a list of children transferred through Northbridge over fifteen years.
Some had died at birth.
Others had been declared missing.
A few had later appeared as the legal children of wealthy families.
Richard Vale had not created one replacement.
He had operated a network.
Celeste’s crime was part of something much older.
At the bottom of the list was Clara Bennett’s assigned destination.
ARDEN HOUSE.
Celeste’s childhood estate.
The property had been abandoned after her father’s death and sold three years earlier to a private foundation.
Adrian recognized the foundation’s name.
“The Everlight Children’s Trust.”
“Who controls it?” Nora asked.
He searched the public records.
The listed director was Evelyn Ross.
The nurse who had disappeared after Oliver’s birth was alive.
And she had spent the last three years running a private residence for displaced children.
The estate stood two hours away.
Detective Chen ordered local police to secure the property, but when officers arrived, they found the gates open and the buildings empty.
The residents had been moved less than twenty-four hours earlier.
A handwritten message had been left in the main office.
