Chapter 12 - the woman who built a life from stolen children
Evelyn Ross was arrested at a roadside hotel the following morning.
She had three false passports, a large amount of cash, and travel documents for seven children.
Clara was not among them.
During interrogation, Evelyn admitted participating in the Vale network.
For fifteen years, Richard Vale and several associates had used hospitals, private clinics, and adoption agencies to move infants between families.
Some substitutions protected inheritances.
Others concealed affairs, medical conditions, or family scandals.
Evelyn told herself she was placing children into wealthy homes.
The money helped her believe it.
“You stole Nora’s daughter,” Detective Chen said.
“I saved her.”
“From whom?”
“Richard.”
Evelyn explained that Oliver had been selected to replace Elliot.
Clara was considered unnecessary.
Richard intended to send the infant to Northbridge and remove every record of her existence.
Samuel intervened.
He persuaded Evelyn to take Clara to the Arden estate, where Celeste’s father maintained a hidden residence for children connected to the network.
“Did Samuel know Oliver would be taken?” Detective Chen asked.
“Not until after it happened.”
“Why did he sign the protocol?”
“Richard threatened Nora and both children. Samuel signed to gain access to the records.”
“Why did he accept money?”
“To make them believe he could be controlled.”
“Where is Clara now?”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I do not know.”
Nora watched from behind the glass.
“She is lying.”
Detective Chen seemed to agree.
Evelyn continued.
“When Celeste inherited Arden House, she discovered the children. Most were transferred into legitimate care. Clara remained because Samuel paid for her protection.”
“Why did he not return her to Nora?”
“Because he believed Nora was being watched.”
“For six years?”
“Richard’s network did not disappear when he died. Edwin Price took control.”
Nora entered the interrogation room before anyone could stop her.
Detective Chen rose, but Nora’s attention remained on Evelyn.
“Look at me.”
Evelyn slowly lifted her gaze.
“You held my son while another woman signed his name away. You carried my daughter out of the hospital. You watched me leave with empty arms.”
“I was following orders.”
“No. You were making choices.”
Evelyn looked toward the table.
“Where is Clara?”
“I told you.”
Nora placed the photograph of the girl in front of her.
“You left this because you wanted me to search. You would not have done that if you believed she was safe.”
Evelyn’s lips trembled.
“Celeste moved her.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Where?”
“I do not know the final location.”
“Who arranged it?”
“Edwin.”
Edwin Price was brought from federal detention for questioning.
When shown Clara’s photograph, he denied knowing her.
Detective Chen placed a financial record beside it.
Three weeks earlier, Edwin had transferred $600,000 to an offshore transport company.
The payment reference read C.B. relocation.
He asked for a deal.
In exchange for a reduced sentence and protection, Edwin offered the location of the transport records and full testimony against Celeste, Dr. Keene, and every surviving member of Richard Vale’s network.
Adrian opposed any deal.
Nora did not.
“Find my daughter first,” she said. “Punish him after.”
The records led to a private airfield.
Clara had been placed on a plane bound for Lisbon under the name Anna Gray.
But the plane had never reached Portugal.
It landed unexpectedly in Maine after a mechanical warning.
A man met the child there and removed her before federal authorities were notified.
Airport footage showed Samuel.
He took Clara’s hand and led her toward a waiting vehicle.
Nora watched the video three times.
Clara did not appear frightened of him.
She called him Daddy.
A message arrived on Nora’s phone.
