Chapter 7 - The Lie They Needed

Detective Vale walked away from Celeste before Hannah reached them.
“What did she want?” Hannah asked.
“The same thing you do. Control of the investigation.”
“Michael left me a warning about you.”
Vale’s face showed no surprise.
“What did it say?”
Hannah kept the brass key hidden in her fist.
“Why should I tell you?”
“Because half a warning can be more dangerous than none.”
The courtroom doors opened before she could respond.
Inside, Celeste’s attorneys presented Hannah as unstable, dishonest, and obsessed with a conspiracy she could not prove.
They displayed the medication found in her handbag.
They showed security footage of her entering the restricted hospital wing.
They submitted a statement from Kells claiming Hannah had threatened staff.
Then Lily’s recorded interview appeared on the courtroom screen.
A social worker asked whether Hannah kept secrets from other adults.
Lily answered yes.
The attorney paused the video.
“Mrs. Reed coached her daughter to conceal information.”
Hannah’s lawyer rose.
“The child was referring to a surprise birthday gift.”
The judge allowed the video to continue.
The social worker asked whether Hannah had ever told Lily to lie.
“No,” Lily said.
“Did she tell you not to trust your grandmother?”
“No.”
“Did your grandmother tell you what answers to give?”
A long silence followed.
Lily looked toward someone outside the camera frame.
“Yes.”
The recording ended abruptly.
Hannah’s lawyer objected.
Celeste’s attorney claimed the camera had malfunctioned.
The judge requested the complete interview file.
The hospital said it had been corrupted.
Without the missing section, the judge refused to grant Celeste permanent guardianship. However, Hannah’s hospital trespass and the unresolved medication evidence prevented Lily’s immediate return.
A supervised meeting was ordered for the next day.
Celeste left the courtroom furious.
Hannah waited near the stairwell until Vale approached.
“Why did Michael warn me about you?” she asked.
Vale looked toward the security cameras.
“My full name is Marcus Alexander Vale.”
“So?”
“Celeste’s maiden name is Vale.”
Hannah stared at him.
“She is your sister?”
“Half sister.”
“Why did you hide that?”
“Because if the department knew, I would be removed from the case.”
“You should be removed.”
“Probably.”
“Are you helping her?”
Vale’s expression hardened.
“Twenty-two years ago, our father died after discovering money missing from the family foundation. Celeste controlled the investigation. Evidence disappeared. I joined the police because no one else asked questions.”
“Michael knew?”
“He discovered our connection last month. He did not trust me because I refused to arrest Celeste without proof.”
Hannah remembered the message.
TRUST NO VALE.
Michael had not written TRUST NO MARCUS.
He had warned her about the entire family.
“Who else carries that name?” she asked.
Vale hesitated.
“Our younger brother, Adrian. He died years ago.”
“How?”
“A hospital fire.”
“At Reed Memorial?”
Vale nodded.
“The sixth floor.”
The supposedly abandoned wing.
Room 614.
Before Hannah could ask more, her phone vibrated.
A video call from Lily’s tablet appeared.
Hannah answered.
The screen showed darkness.
Then Lily’s frightened voice whispered, “Mommy, Grandma says we’re going somewhere the cameras can’t see.”
A car door slammed.
The call disconnected.

Hannah ran toward the courthouse exit.
Celeste’s vehicle was already gone.
