Chapter 14 - The House After Celeste

Michael returned home three weeks later.
He walked with a cane and tired quickly, but Lily treated every step as a victory.
She decorated the hallway with paper sunflowers. Naomi brought dinner. Detective Vale stood awkwardly in the doorway until Lily insisted he join them.
For the first time since the crash, the house felt alive.
The court restored Hannah’s full custody.
Naomi’s suspension was removed, and she accepted a position helping independent investigators review Reed Memorial’s patient files.
Kells remained in federal protection while providing evidence against former board members.
Celeste waited in custody for trial.
Adrian began rehabilitation under Marcus’s protection.
The main threat seemed contained.
But Thomas Mercer remained missing.
Hannah searched public records, old photographs, foundation documents, and construction files.
Her father appeared under several names.
Thomas Mercer.
Thomas Vale.
Thomas Grey.
In one document, he was identified only as T.M., founder of the Continuity Program.
Michael reviewed the files beside her.
“Celeste feared him,” he said.
“She also worked with him.”
“Adrian said your father tried to stop the program.”
“After helping create it.”
Hannah placed the old photograph on the table.
The yellow car in the picture looked nearly identical to Lily’s toy.
“Did you copy this design?” she asked.
Michael examined it.
“No. I bought Lily’s car at the museum.”
“Which museum?”
“The Vale Science Center.”
The museum was funded by a shell company listed in the Northlake ledger.
Lily’s toy had not been a random purchase.
Someone had placed it in the museum shop where Michael would find it.
Someone who knew Lily liked cars.
Someone who knew Michael enjoyed building electronic projects with her.
The device had been designed to enter their home.
“It recorded us for months,” Hannah whispered.
Michael looked at the car, now returned from police evidence.
“I thought I added the recorder.”
“You added a new recorder. What if another system was already inside?”
They opened the plastic body.
Beneath Michael’s wires was a second circuit board.
It was smaller, older, and connected to a hidden transmitter.
Michael removed a memory chip.
The files on it were encrypted.
One folder opened without a password.
It contained photographs taken inside their house.
Hannah cooking.
Michael working at his desk.
Lily sleeping on the sofa.
Celeste standing alone in the kitchen late at night.
In the final image, Celeste faced the toy car.
She was holding a handwritten note.
Hannah enlarged the photograph.
The note read:
SHE FOUND ROOM 614. BEGIN PHASE TWO.
The date was two months before Michael’s crash.
Celeste had known Hannah would discover the hidden room long before Hannah entered the hospital.
“The entire sequence was anticipated,” Michael said.
“The crash?”
“The accusation. The car. Northlake. Maybe even Celeste’s arrest.”
Hannah felt cold.
“Why would my father want Celeste arrested?”
“To remove her.”
“And replace her with whom?”
The front doorbell rang.
Vale checked the security camera.
No one was outside.
A plain envelope lay on the porch.
Inside was a single train ticket.
Destination: Blackthorn.
Departure: Midnight.
The same town where Michael’s car had left the bridge.

A message had been written beneath the ticket.
Bring the yellow car, or the next fire will not fail.
