Celeste’s formal hearing took place six days later.
By then, the case had become national news.
The discovery of Northlake exposed decades of medical fraud, unlawful confinement, identity theft, and stolen charitable funds.
Adrian’s survival invalidated Celeste’s control of the Reed Family Foundation.
Kells agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
He admitted planting medication in Michael’s car and Hannah’s handbag. He also admitted falsifying Lily’s interview and ordering hospital staff to block Hannah from seeing her husband.
Celeste sat silently through every accusation.
She showed no fear until the yellow toy car was placed on the evidence table.
Police had recovered its complete recordings.
The missing Room 614 file contained Celeste’s threats, Kells’s admissions, and Michael’s voice identifying the plot against him.
Hannah testified first.
She described the crash, the false evidence, the restricted hospital wing, and the moment her daughter was forced to protect her.
Lily did not have to appear in the courtroom.
Her complete social-services interview was restored from an automatic backup.
The final section showed Celeste standing outside the camera frame, silently directing Lily’s answers.
Michael testified remotely from a secured rehabilitation room.
He spoke slowly, but every word carried through the courtroom.
“My mother did not act out of love,” he said. “She acted because she believed our family belonged to her.”
Celeste finally reacted.
“You would have nothing without me.”
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“I nearly had nothing because of you.”
Adrian’s testimony ended her control of the foundation.
His original voting rights were restored, then transferred temporarily to an independent public trust.
Millions of dollars were frozen.
Patient families began filing claims.
Former hospital employees came forward with records they had been afraid to reveal.
The judge denied Celeste bail.
As officers approached, she turned toward Hannah.
“You think you saved your family.”
“I did.”
“You saved Michael from me.”
“That is enough.”
Celeste smiled faintly.
“But who will save you from Thomas?”
Hannah refused to let her see fear.
“My father is dead.”
“No,” Celeste said. “Thomas Mercer simply became someone else.”
The officers led her away.
Outside the courthouse, reporters filled the steps.
Hannah avoided them.
She found Lily waiting in a private room with Naomi.
The child ran into her arms.
“Are we going home?”
“Yes.”
“Is Daddy coming too?”
“When the doctors say he is ready.”
Lily looked toward the yellow car in the evidence pouch.
“Can I have it back?”
“Soon.”
“Daddy said it helped us.”
“It did.”
Lily lowered her voice.
“It also talked when nobody was there.”
Hannah frowned.
“What did it say?”
“A man asked if I remembered him.”
“When?”
“At Grandma’s house.”
“Did you see him?”
Lily shook her head.
“He was outside my window.”
Hannah felt the joy of the hearing drain away.
“What did he look like?”
“He had your eyes.”
That evening, Hannah returned home under police protection.
A package waited on the kitchen table.
There were no signs of forced entry.
Inside was an old photograph of Hannah as a baby.
