Chapter 12 - The Ledger Beneath Northlake

Hannah traveled to Northlake with two officers and Naomi.

The underground unit had been transformed into a crime scene. Evidence boxes filled the corridors. Technicians photographed every locked cabinet and medical device.

Adrian Vale lay in the secured chamber.

He had Marcus’s eyes and Celeste’s sharp cheekbones.

His voice was little more than air.

“Hannah Mercer,” he said.

Reed was Hannah’s married name.

Mercer had been her father’s surname.

“You knew Thomas Mercer?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“He was my attorney.”

“My father repaired industrial elevators.”

“That was the life he chose after the fire.”

Hannah sat beside him.

“Celeste said he started it.”

“He did.”

“Why?”

“To destroy the records.”

“Whose records?”

Adrian lifted one trembling hand.

Vale gave him a small tablet containing scanned evidence recovered from Northlake.

Adrian selected a photograph.

It showed a much younger Celeste standing beside Kells and Thomas Mercer.

Hannah’s father wore a dark suit.

Behind them was a sign reading Vale Biomedical Continuity Program.

“My father was involved in this?”

“He helped create the legal structure,” Adrian said. “Then he discovered what they were doing.”

“What were they doing?”

“Stealing identities from dying patients. Creating accounts, companies, votes, and contracts in their names.”

Hannah thought of the dead patients listed on the hospital payroll.

The fraud had begun decades earlier.

“Why burn the sixth floor?”

“Thomas wanted to destroy the original identity archive. He believed the fire alarm would clear the wing.”

“But you were inside.”

“Celeste locked me in the records room.”

Hannah stared at him.

“Why keep you alive afterward?”

“She needed my blood, my signature, my memory.”

Adrian’s hand fell back to the blanket.

“She spent years forcing me to approve transfers. When I refused, Kells signed for me.”

“Why did my father disappear?”

“He did not disappear. He collected evidence.”

“My father died in a construction accident.”

Adrian’s eyes opened.

“No.”

The single word struck harder than a shout.

Hannah remembered the call from the police when she was sixteen. A collapsed scaffold. A closed coffin. An insurance payment that arrived before the funeral.

“Are you saying he was murdered?”

“I am saying the man in that coffin was not Thomas Mercer.”

Hannah stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall.

“Then where is he?”

Adrian looked toward a locked evidence cabinet.

“The ledger.”

Police opened the cabinet.

Inside was a thick black book wrapped in plastic.

Michael’s ledger had been transferred to Northlake after the crash.

Every false patient, shell company, payment, and signature appeared inside.

Near the final pages, Hannah found her father’s name.

THOMAS MERCER.

Status: Active.

Authorization level: Founder.

The last transaction had been approved only three weeks earlier.

Her father had supposedly been dead for nineteen years.

“Who used his identity?” Hannah asked.

Adrian’s gaze drifted toward the door.

“No one.”

Footsteps approached from the corridor.

Maren Holt entered under police escort.

She looked at Hannah with tears in her eyes.

“Your father is alive,” Maren said.

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

“You gave me the brass key. You knew about the ledger. Do not tell me you know nothing.”

Maren removed a sealed envelope from inside her coat.

“This arrived at my home after Michael’s crash.”

Hannah tore it open.

The letter contained one sentence.

Protect my granddaughter until I return.

It was signed Thomas Mercer.
