Chapter 9 - THE OTHER DAUGHTER

Her name was Anna Rusk.
That was what Calvin called her.
Rachel's sister stood beneath the quarry lights with the pistol steady in both hands. She wore black work clothes and moved with military precision. The scar on her face looked old, the result of an injury no one explained.
Marcus held the ledger against his chest.
"You promised immunity," he said.
Calvin smiled. "I promised to discuss it."
Eleanor and the others remained hidden above the quarry. Sheriff Crowe's team was still navigating the washed-out road. Jonah used a directional microphone to capture the conversation.
Anna stepped closer to Marcus. "The book."
"Who are you?"
"The daughter your father chose not to save."
Marcus looked toward Calvin. "She is Lydia's baby?"
"One of them," Calvin said.
The words stunned everyone.
Lydia had delivered twins.
Hospital records mentioned only one infant because the second baby was born in a private treatment room before Lydia was moved to maternity. Calvin's father took Anna. Thomas left with Rachel, believing she was Eleanor's biological child.
But Calvin claimed the bracelet switch had been deliberate.
"Our father wanted a Vale child as insurance," he said. "Thomas wanted a Rusk child as protection. Each family raised the other's blood."
Eleanor struggled to breathe.
Rachel beside her whispered, "No."
Calvin continued, enjoying the cruelty. "Thomas discovered the truth years later. By then, he loved Rachel. He kept her and abandoned Anna to us."
Anna's jaw tightened.
Marcus looked at the scar on her face. "What did they do to you?"
"What your family avoided."
Calvin's men moved closer.
Marcus opened the ledger.
"This book names judges, sheriffs, inspectors, and company officers. If I disappear, copies go to federal investigators."
Calvin's confidence flickered.
"You did not make copies."
Marcus smiled. "You taught me leverage."
For the first time, Eleanor saw something of Thomas in him, not the cruelty, but the stubborn refusal to kneel once cornered.
Anna shot the ground beside Marcus's foot.
The sound rolled through the quarry.
Rachel stood.
"Anna!"
Every face turned toward the ridge.
Eleanor grabbed for her, too late.
Rachel descended the path with her hands visible.
"Do not do this," she called.
Anna aimed at her. "You got the mother. The farm. The name. Do not ask me for mercy too."
"I did not know you existed."
"That is what comfortable people always say."
Calvin ordered his men to bring Rachel down.
Eleanor stepped from hiding. "Take me instead."
Anna looked at her.
For one impossible moment, Eleanor saw the infant from the photograph, the missing child from the darkened nursery, the life that had unfolded beyond every family story.
"I am not your mother," Eleanor said. "But I am sorry no one came for you."
Anna's expression cracked.
Calvin drew a pistol from beneath his coat.
"Sentiment has ruined enough tonight."
He fired at Marcus.
Anna moved first, knocking the gun aside. The bullet struck one of the quarry lights. Darkness swallowed half the platform.
Sheriff Crowe's vehicles appeared on the upper road, sirens cutting through the storm.
Calvin's men scattered.
Marcus threw the ledger toward Rachel. Anna lunged for it. Both women caught the cover, lost their footing, and fell against the edge of the loading platform.
The ledger slipped from their hands.
It dropped into the flooded quarry pit below.
Calvin screamed and jumped after it.
The water closed over him.
May you like
He did not surface.
Neither did the ledger.
