Chapter 10 - BLOOD TESTS AND BROKEN NAMES
Search divers spent three days in the quarry.
They found Calvin's coat, one shoe, and the pistol. They did not find his body.
The ledger remained missing.
Federal agents took control of the contamination investigation after Lucas Penn's confession and the recordings from the quarry. Northstar's accounts were frozen. Blue Heron Holdings was raided. Several former Bellwether executives were arrested.
For the first time in thirty-seven years, the buried drums were treated as evidence rather than a secret.
The farm became a restricted site, but environmental specialists determined the contamination could be removed without destroying the orchard or poisoning the creek. The cleanup would take years and cost millions. A federal recovery fund and seized Northstar assets would cover most of it.
Eleanor should have felt victorious.
Instead, she watched strangers in protective suits walk across Thomas's fields and wondered which parts of her marriage had been real.
DNA tests were arranged.
The results arrived in sealed envelopes at Miriam's office.
Rachel was not Thomas's biological daughter.
She was Eleanor's.
The maternity bracelet had not been switched.
Calvin had lied.
Anna was Lydia Rusk's daughter and Calvin's niece. Her biological father was unknown.
Marcus was the biological son of both Eleanor and Thomas.
The truth should have simplified things. It did not.
Rachel had spent years believing she belonged to another family. Anna had spent years believing Rachel had stolen her life. Thomas had known enough to stop the lies but chose silence.
Anna refused to speak to investigators unless Eleanor was present.
They met in a secure interview room. Anna sat with her hands cuffed to a ring beneath the table. She faced charges for kidnapping, assault, weapons violations, and conspiracy. Yet prosecutors were considering leniency because she had turned the gun away from Marcus and saved his life.
"Calvin raised me," she said. "Not as family. As proof that people become whatever fear requires."
"Did he tell you Rachel replaced you?"
"Every birthday."
"Why believe him after learning he lied about everything else?"
Anna's eyes were flat. "Because hatred was the only inheritance he gave me."
Eleanor placed a copy of the DNA results on the table.
Anna read them without visible emotion.
Then she asked, "Where is Lydia?"
The official record said Lydia died in 1990. Anna claimed that was false.
She had seen Lydia alive six years earlier in a private care facility owned through a Northstar shell company. Lydia suffered memory loss and rarely spoke, but once she repeated two words.
Vale cellar.
Eleanor knew of no cellar beyond the farmhouse basement and the old root storage room.
Samuel did.
Thomas had sealed a stone chamber beneath the original farmhouse foundation in 1995. He said it was unstable.
The next morning, engineers opened it.
Inside they found filing cabinets, cassette tapes, photographs, and a hospital bassinet wrapped in plastic.
On the wall, Thomas had written dates in chalk.
One date matched Rachel's birth.
Another matched Marcus's kidnapping.
The final date was three weeks after Thomas's death.
Beneath it were the words:
HE CAME BACK FOR THE BOOK.

The image showed Thomas entering the cellar alive months after Eleanor buried him.
