Chapter 13 - THE AUCTION OF LIES

There was no farm auction scheduled.
Then, two days later, a court filing appeared.
Northstar's creditors sought emergency liquidation of several assets, including a disputed claim against Vale Farm. A public auction would be held at the county fairgrounds to sell the claim and related property rights.
Miriam called it legal theater. The claim was likely worthless, but the auction would attract investors, reporters, land agents, and anyone hoping to profit from Northstar's collapse.
It would also provide perfect cover for a meeting.
Eleanor went despite federal objections.
She wore Thomas's brown jacket and carried no phone. Jonah concealed a transmitter inside the jacket button. Rachel attended separately with Miriam. Marcus remained in custody but arranged through his lawyer to provide a sworn statement exposing Calvin's financial network.
The auction hall was crowded. Folding chairs faced a raised platform. Reporters clustered near the doors. Former Northstar employees avoided one another's eyes.
At noon, the auctioneer began selling equipment, vehicles, mineral rights, and shell-company interests.
Lot 47 was described as a contingent development claim related to Vale Farm.
Bidding opened at one dollar.
A man in the back offered ten thousand.
Rachel recognized him as a Northstar accountant.
Another bidder offered fifty thousand.
Then a woman in a wheelchair entered through the side door.
She wore a blue scarf and dark glasses. Her hair was white. Her face looked fragile, but the shape of her mouth matched Anna's.
Lydia.
Eleanor stood.
The woman looked directly at her.
Before Eleanor could move, the fire alarm sounded.
People surged toward the exits. Smoke poured from a ventilation grate. Security officers shouted conflicting instructions.
Lydia's wheelchair vanished into the crowd.
Eleanor followed the blue scarf through a service corridor and into the livestock pavilion behind the hall. Rows of empty stalls created a maze of steel gates.
The wheelchair waited near the far exit.
It was empty.
Samuel stepped from a stall.
He looked exhausted, with a bandage around his left hand.
"Where is Lydia?" Eleanor demanded.
"Safe for the moment."
"Thomas said not to trust you."
"Thomas trusted no one after he discovered Calvin had agents inside federal law enforcement."
"Did you choose Marcus to be kidnapped?"
Samuel closed his eyes. "Yes."
The admission landed with more force than denial.
He explained that Bellwether intended to take Rachel because Calvin believed she was Lydia's child. Samuel redirected them toward Marcus, thinking a teenage boy had a better chance of surviving and that police could intervene.
"You gambled with my son."
"And lost."
"That is not remorse."
"No. It is a fact I wake with every day."
Samuel said Thomas survived the hospice because Samuel arranged a false death after Calvin attempted to poison him. Thomas entered hiding to protect Eleanor and gather final evidence. He reunited with Lydia at Briar Glen, where she had been kept under sedation.
"Where are they now?"
"Calvin found the safe house. Thomas moved Lydia. Then he disappeared."
"Calvin is dead."
Samuel shook his head. "Calvin has escaped water before."
A gunshot echoed from the auction hall.
Samuel pulled Eleanor behind a stall wall.
A man ran into the pavilion wearing an auction security jacket. He fired twice. Samuel returned fire with a small pistol. The attacker fell.
Beneath the man's jacket was a waterproof pouch.
Inside lay a page from the gray ledger.
The page listed payments made after Calvin's supposed death.
The most recent payment had been authorized that morning.
Recipient: T. Vale.
Eleanor stared at the name.
May you like
Thomas was alive.
And someone was paying him from Northstar's hidden accounts.
