Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE WITH NO WINDOWS

Marcus wanted to go alone.

Eleanor refused.

The photograph contained few clues: a concrete wall, a metal chair, a strip of yellow insulation, and a shadow shaped like a narrow window. Jonah enhanced the image and identified a manufacturer's label on an electrical box. Only three abandoned industrial properties in the county used that equipment.

One belonged to Blue Heron Holdings.

The same Northstar subsidiary named in the farm purchase agreement.

Sheriff Daniel Crowe wanted to raid the property immediately. Miriam warned that Calvin might move Diane or kill her if police approached visibly. Samuel recognized the building as a former Bellwether storage facility outside Bellwether's old rail district.

"There are underground rooms," he said. "Thomas and I met an informant there in 1994."

Eleanor looked at Marcus. "What original files do they want?"

He hesitated.

Then he admitted that three months earlier he had stolen Thomas's document box. He copied most of the contents but kept one folder hidden after realizing Calvin planned to abandon him once the sale closed.

"Where is it?"

"Safe-deposit box."

"What is inside?"

"Payment records. Names. Photographs. And a ledger Dad never mentioned."

Samuel went still. "The gray ledger?"

Marcus nodded.

The ledger documented Bellwether's payments to landowners, officials, inspectors, and attorneys over four decades. It could connect Calvin to bribery, kidnapping, illegal disposal, and obstruction.

It could also expose respected families across the county.

At eleven thirty, Marcus drove toward the rail district carrying a decoy folder. A tracking device was hidden in his belt. Sheriff Crowe's team followed at a distance. Eleanor rode with Miriam and Jonah in an unmarked van.

Rachel remained at the farm under guard.

Rain swept across the abandoned warehouses. Marcus entered through a side door and disappeared from the camera feed.

For six minutes, nothing happened.

Then his tracker moved downward.

"Basement," Jonah said.

The signal stopped.

A text arrived on Eleanor's phone from Marcus.

COME IN ALONE OR SHE DIES.

Miriam grabbed Eleanor's wrist. "No."

"They know I am here."

"That does not mean you obey."

Another photograph appeared. Diane was conscious now. A man wearing black gloves held a knife against her throat.

Eleanor opened the van door.

Sheriff Crowe cursed through the radio but adapted quickly. His team moved into position around the building while Eleanor approached the side entrance carrying Thomas's metal document box.

Inside, the warehouse smelled of rust and wet concrete. A single row of bulbs led toward a freight elevator. The elevator door stood open.

Eleanor descended one level.

The underground room had no windows.

Marcus knelt near the wall with his hands behind his head. Diane sat bound to the chair. Calvin Rusk stood beside her, holding no weapon, his suit immaculate despite the rain.

Lucas Penn held the knife.

"Mrs. Vale," Calvin said. "You continue to mistake stubbornness for courage."

Eleanor placed the box on the floor.

"Let them go."

"After I verify the ledger."

Calvin opened the box. Inside lay blank farm invoices.

His expression changed.

Lucas pressed the knife closer to Diane's throat.

Marcus lunged.

The room exploded into movement.

Diane screamed. Lucas swung the knife. Marcus struck his arm, and both men crashed into the chair. Eleanor pulled Diane backward as gunfire cracked in the corridor.

Sheriff Crowe's deputies stormed the room.

Calvin vanished through a steel door at the rear.

Marcus pursued him before anyone could stop him.

Eleanor followed into a tunnel lined with old pipes. Ahead, footsteps echoed, then a shout, then silence.

They found Marcus alone beside an open storm drain.

Calvin was gone.

On the tunnel floor lay a bloodied handkerchief, a silver cuff link, and a photograph sealed in plastic.

The photograph showed Thomas Vale standing beside Calvin Rusk in 1989.

Between them stood a young woman holding an infant.

On the back, Thomas had written one sentence.

ELEANOR MUST NEVER LEARN WHO RACHEL'S FATHER IS.
