Chapter 6 - The Airport Lie)

They reached the airport at 8:54.

Forty-six minutes before Laura's scheduled departure.

Michael stopped at the curb.

Daniel opened his door.

Michael caught his arm.

"Daniel."

Daniel looked back.

"Whatever happens in there, remember something."

"What?"

"Laura has been lied to too."

Daniel nodded.

He knew.

Knowing did not make the fear smaller.

Noah climbed out.

Daniel took his hand.

They entered the terminal.

The departure board showed the Seattle flight on time.

Security lines stretched across the hall.

Daniel had no ticket.

Noah had no ticket.

They could not pass the checkpoint.

Daniel searched the crowd.

No Laura.

No Martin.

He called Martin again.

The attorney answered.

"Stop calling me."

Daniel's voice was steady.

"I'm at the airport."

Martin cursed.

"Where is she?"

"You need to leave this alone."

"Put Laura on the phone."

"She doesn't want to speak to you."

Daniel looked at Noah.

"Then let her tell me."

Silence.

"Martin."

The attorney sighed.

"Daniel, your wife is emotionally fragile."

"You're the attorney who processed her death while knowing she was alive."

"I did not know until much later."

"Fourteen months ago."

Martin stopped speaking.

Daniel knew he had hit the truth.

"You moved money from Noah's trust."

"Be careful."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's advice."

"Good. Here's mine. If Laura boards that plane because you lied to her, every document in her house goes to a forensic accountant before midnight."

Martin's breathing changed.

Daniel continued.

"And Michael Reed has the reservation record."

Another silence.

"Who is Michael Reed?"

"The man who watched Vanessa bring my supposedly dead wife into his restaurant."

Martin disconnected.

Daniel smiled without humor.

"He's scared."

Noah pointed across the terminal.

"Dad."

Daniel turned.

Martin Shaw stood near a bank of ticketing kiosks.

Gray hair.

Glasses.

Dark overcoat.

He was alone.

Daniel crossed the terminal.

Martin saw him and immediately started walking away.

Daniel called his name.

The attorney stopped.

People moved around them.

Daniel approached.

"Where is Laura?"

Martin adjusted his glasses.

"She went through security."

"Give me your boarding pass."

"What?"

"You heard me."

"I'm not giving you anything."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then call her."

Martin looked at Noah.

"Noah shouldn't be involved in this."

Daniel's expression became lethal.

"Do not use my son as a moral argument."

Martin swallowed.

Noah stared at him.

The attorney looked away first.

Daniel said, "Laura believes I rejected her."

Martin remained silent.

"You know those emails were fake."

Martin's face tightened.

"Vanessa created most of them."

"Most?"

Martin had said too much.

Daniel heard it.

"So you created some."

Martin shook his head.

"Daniel."

"How many?"

"It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

Martin lowered his voice.

"I was trying to manage a legal disaster."

"You stole from a child."

"That trust was poorly structured."

Daniel almost laughed.

"And that gave you permission?"

"I intended to restore the funds."

"Before Laura came back."

Martin's jaw tightened.

Daniel understood everything.

The missing money had not simply vanished.

Martin had treated the trust as temporary capital.

Investments.

Loans.

Maybe personal ventures.

Laura's reappearance had turned risk into panic.

Vanessa had joined because she needed money.

Together, they had kept the one person who could trigger scrutiny away from Daniel.

Noah suddenly spoke.

"Where's my mom?"

Martin looked at him.

The boy repeated the question.

"Where is she?"

Martin's face softened slightly.

"She's leaving because she thinks that's best."

"You told her that?"

"No."

"Aunt Vanessa did."

Martin glanced at Daniel.

Noah continued.

"Mom cried when she saw me."

Martin said nothing.

"She didn't look dangerous."

Daniel squeezed Noah's hand.

Martin finally sighed.

"She isn't through security."

Daniel's heart slammed.

"Where is she?"

Martin looked toward the parking garage.

"She changed her mind about the flight."

Daniel stared.

"When?"

"Ten minutes ago."

"Why?"

"She saw you calling."

Daniel's eyes widened.

Martin held up his phone.

"Vanessa texted her."

Daniel took one step closer.

"What did she say?"

Martin hesitated.

Then handed over the phone.

A message from Vanessa was visible.

Daniel found the phone. He knows everything. He is furious. Do not let Noah see you. You will only hurt him again.

Daniel's vision blurred with rage.

Another message followed.

He said if you come near them, he will call the police.

Daniel looked at Martin.

"You knew that was a lie."

Martin did not answer.

"Where is Laura?"

"Parking level four."

Daniel ran.

Noah ran beside him.

They reached the garage elevator.

Too slow.

Daniel took the stairs.

Level two.

Three.

Four.

He burst through the door.

Rows of vehicles stretched beneath fluorescent lights.

A silver sedan moved toward the exit.

Daniel saw Laura in the passenger seat.

"Laura!"

The car stopped.

Noah froze.

Daniel stopped too.

Through the windshield, a woman turned.

Four years disappeared.

Laura Carter looked older.

Thinner.

Her dark-brown hair was shorter than Daniel remembered.

A faint scar crossed her temple.

But it was her.

Daniel knew before she opened the door.

Before she stepped onto the concrete.

Before Noah whispered, "Mom."

Laura stared at them.

Her mouth opened.

She could not speak.

Noah released Daniel's hand.

He ran.

Laura dropped to her knees.

The boy collided with her.

She wrapped both arms around him.

A sound came from her that Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.

Half sob.

Half gasp.

Half the pain of four lost years leaving her body at once.

Noah buried his face against her shoulder.

"I remembered you."

Laura cried harder.

"I know, baby."

Daniel stood ten feet away.

He could not move.

Laura looked up at him over Noah's shoulder.

Their eyes met.

Daniel had imagined this moment thousands of times.

In dreams, he always ran to her.

In reality, there were too many years between them.

Too many lies.

Too much grief.

Laura slowly stood.

Noah remained pressed against her side.

She looked terrified.

"Daniel."

His name in her voice nearly broke him.

He stepped closer.

"I never wrote those emails."

Laura closed her eyes.

"I know."

He stopped.

"You know?"

She nodded.

"I found proof two weeks ago."

Daniel looked back toward the stairwell.

Martin had not followed.

Laura wiped her face.

"I was trying to decide how to tell you everything."

"By flying to Seattle?"

Her eyes dropped.

"I panicked."

"Because Vanessa texted you."

Laura looked up.

"You saw that?"

"Yes."

She laughed bitterly.

"I still believed her for almost five minutes."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"Why?"

"Because she spent eleven months teaching me to doubt every instinct I had."

Noah held Laura's hand.

Daniel looked at them.

"Come home."

Laura went still.

Daniel immediately corrected himself.

"No. I'm sorry. That's not fair."

Her eyes filled again.

"I don't even know where home is anymore."

Daniel nodded.

"Then don't come home."

Laura looked surprised.

"Come somewhere safe."

"Where?"

Daniel thought of Vanessa.

Martin.

The empty house.

The trust.

Then he thought of Michael Reed.

"Back to the restaurant."

Laura almost laughed.

"That sounds insane."

"It probably is."

Noah looked between them.

"Can I get lemonade?"

For the first time that night, Laura smiled.

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

The smile was different.

Older.

Sad.

But unmistakably hers.

"Yes," Daniel said.

Noah squeezed her hand.

"Mom can sit next to me."

Laura looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"If she wants to."

Laura's expression softened.

"I want to."

Behind them, a car horn sounded.

The silver sedan's driver leaned out.

Daniel recognized no one.

Laura said, "That's a car service."

Daniel looked around.

"Where's Martin?"

Laura's expression changed.

"He said he had to take care of something."

Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.

Michael answered.

"Tell me you're not at Briar Lane."

There was silence.

Then Michael said, "Why?"

Daniel's blood went cold.

"Because Martin left the airport."

Another pause.

Michael swore.

"I'm standing in Laura's living room."

Daniel grabbed Noah's hand.

May you like

"Get out of the house."

At that exact moment, Michael whispered, "Someone just came through the back door."
