Chapter 3 - The Message Laura Left Behind)

No one at the table moved while Laura's recording played.

Daniel stood with the little phone in his hand.

His face had become almost expressionless.

That frightened Vanessa more than shouting would have.

Laura's voice crackled through the speaker.

"I don't know what Vanessa has told you about me. I don't know what she has told Noah. I don't even know what you believe happened after the accident."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The accident.

Four years earlier, Laura had driven north alone to meet a potential client for her interior design business.

Rain became sleet before sunset.

At 8:42 p.m., her vehicle broke through a damaged guardrail near a mountain road.

Search teams found the car forty feet down an embankment the next morning.

The driver's side door had been torn open.

There was blood on the airbag.

Laura was gone.

Searchers spent eleven days combing forest, riverbanks, drainage tunnels and nearby properties.

Nothing.

For months Daniel refused to accept that she was dead.

Vanessa had been the one telling him to sleep.

To eat.

To think of Noah.

A year later, she encouraged him to sign paperwork allowing Laura to be declared legally deceased.

"You can't raise Noah in limbo forever," she had said.

Daniel had believed she was saving him.

Now Laura's voice continued.

"I survived the crash. I don't remember everything. A truck driver found me nearly two miles from the road the next morning. I had wandered into a service access route. I had a severe concussion, fractures, and no identification."

Daniel opened his eyes.

Vanessa's lips parted.

Michael Reed watched her.

Laura continued.

"For months, I didn't know my full name. I remembered pieces. A kitchen with yellow curtains. A little boy laughing in a bathtub. Someone named Daniel. Doctors called it post-traumatic amnesia."

Daniel sat down without realizing it.

Noah slid from his chair and moved beside him.

Daniel immediately placed an arm around him.

"I eventually remembered enough to search. I found an article about my own disappearance. I found my obituary. I found a photograph of you and Noah at the memorial."

The recording paused.

Laura breathed shakily.

"I was afraid."

Daniel covered his mouth.

He could see the memorial.

He remembered standing beneath gray November clouds holding Noah's hand.

He remembered Vanessa beside him.

The recording resumed.

"I contacted the first person in your family whose number I could find."

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

Laura said her name.

"Vanessa."

Michael's eyes narrowed.

Vanessa whispered, "There are things she isn't telling you."

Daniel raised one finger.

She stopped.

Laura continued.

"She told me you had finally recovered. She told me you had suffered a breakdown after I disappeared. She said hearing from me suddenly could destroy you."

Daniel slowly lowered his hand.

That lie hurt because it was built from pieces of truth.

He had struggled.

He had experienced panic attacks.

He had taken leave from work.

But he had never stopped wanting Laura home.

Never.

"Vanessa said she would help me contact you carefully. She said I needed to prove I was stable first. She asked for medical records. Financial records. My address. Everything."

The recording distorted briefly.

"Then she told me you didn't want contact."

Daniel turned toward his sister.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never said that."

Laura's voice contradicted her immediately.

"She sent me messages she said were from you."

Daniel's face changed.

"They said I had abandoned Noah. They said you considered me dangerous. They said if I came near the house, you would get a restraining order."

Noah looked at his father.

Daniel's hand trembled.

"I never wrote anything."

Vanessa took a step forward.

"Daniel, she was unstable. You don't understand what condition she was in."

The recording kept playing.

"I believed her because I hated myself for not remembering you sooner."

Laura began crying on the recording.

Daniel looked down.

Noah pressed closer to him.

"I spent almost three years thinking my husband wanted me gone."

The restaurant seemed smaller with every word.

"Then last year, I discovered one of the messages supposedly sent by Daniel had been created from an account registered to Vanessa's business office."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Michael whispered, "Jesus."

Laura continued.

"I confronted her."

Silence.

"She stopped pretending."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"She told me if I appeared suddenly, I would destroy Noah's life. She said he barely remembered me. She said he called her when he was scared. She said I was selfish for wanting to come back."

Noah shook his head.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

Noah was crying again.

"I remembered Mom."

That word seemed to tear through Daniel.

Laura's voice continued.

"I demanded to see my son."

The recording became quieter.

"Vanessa agreed under conditions."

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

"What conditions?"

Vanessa did not answer.

The recording did.

"She said I could see Noah if I paid for what she called private family counseling and transition expenses."

Michael glanced at her designer handbag.

Laura continued.

"I transferred money because I was terrified she would disappear with him if I refused."

Daniel stood.

"How much?"

Vanessa backed away.

The recording said, "One hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars over nine months."

Gasps moved through the nearby tables.

Vanessa's composure finally cracked.

"That money wasn't for me."

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Then where is it?"

She did not answer.

Laura continued.

"I saw Noah twice. Vanessa supervised both meetings. The second time was here, at Bellweather Bistro."

Michael looked at the reservation tablet.

"That's why she asked me to take the photograph."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Michael's eyes remained on Vanessa.

"She told me it was for a family reunification record. I thought they were working with a therapist."

Laura's message continued.

"I slipped the phone into Noah's shoe during the second meeting. I told him not to listen. Only to give it to you."

Daniel looked at his son.

Noah whispered, "I tried."

Daniel knelt and pulled him close.

"I know."

Noah pressed his face against his father's shoulder.

Daniel held him for several seconds.

Then Laura's voice became urgent.

"If you're hearing this, Daniel, Vanessa probably discovered the phone."

Vanessa's breathing became fast.

"I don't know what she'll do next. But there's something else you need to know."

Daniel lifted the phone.

The recording clicked.

Then another file appeared automatically.

The title was a date.

Yesterday.

Daniel stared at it.

The message had been transferred to the phone remotely less than twenty-four hours earlier.

He pressed play.

Laura spoke only one sentence.

"Vanessa knows I found the trust account."

Daniel looked up.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Then Laura added one more line.

"If she hasn't told you about Briar Lane, go there before she does."
