Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Refused to Stay Dead)

The silver sedan disappeared before Daniel could reach his SUV.

He stood in the alley listening to the engine fade.

Laura had been inside the house.

Perhaps only seconds before they entered.

Perhaps upstairs while Daniel opened the cabinet.

Perhaps close enough to hear his voice.

The thought was unbearable.

Daniel called Laura's old number.

Disconnected.

He called the number attached to one of the medical records.

No answer.

Michael searched the downstairs rooms.

Vanessa remained near the staircase.

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew she was here today."

"No."

"That car came from behind the house."

"I don't control every car in America."

Noah tugged Daniel's sleeve.

"Dad."

Daniel crouched.

"What is it?"

"When Mom left the restaurant last time, she went in that car."

"Was she driving?"

Noah shook his head.

"A man was."

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael's expression sharpened.

"Do you remember him?"

Noah thought carefully.

"Gray hair. Glasses."

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel saw it.

"Who is he?"

"I don't know."

"Vanessa."

She exhaled.

"His name is Martin Shaw."

Daniel recognized the name.

Martin Shaw had worked as their family attorney for nearly fifteen years.

He had handled Laura's legal declaration of death.

He had processed the trust after she disappeared.

He had also recommended that Daniel allow Vanessa to handle routine trust administration during his grief.

Daniel felt sick.

"Why is Martin driving Laura around?"

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"Because she hired him."

"Why would Laura hire the man who helped declare her dead?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Michael answered instead.

"Maybe she didn't."

Daniel called Martin.

It rang six times.

Then voicemail.

He called again.

Voicemail.

On the third attempt, the call connected.

No one spoke.

Daniel could hear road noise.

"Martin."

Silence.

"Is Laura with you?"

A breath.

Then Martin said, "Daniel, don't do anything impulsive."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Where is my wife?"

Vanessa flinched at the word wife.

Martin lowered his voice.

"This situation is more complicated than Vanessa has explained."

Daniel looked directly at his sister.

"I assumed that."

"You need to let Laura leave."

Every muscle in Daniel's body tightened.

"Leave where?"

"I can't tell you."

"Then give her the phone."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Martin hesitated.

Daniel heard a woman speaking faintly in the background.

His heart stopped.

"Laura?"

The call disconnected.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Noah whispered, "Was that Mom?"

Daniel nodded.

He called again.

No answer.

Then a text arrived from Martin.

Do not follow us. Laura believes this is safest for Noah.

Daniel showed Michael.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You see? She chose to leave."

Daniel looked at her as though she had said something absurd.

"After you spent eleven months telling her I didn't want her?"

"I didn't force her into that car."

"No. You just built the road."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You want someone to blame because the truth is ugly."

Daniel stepped closer.

"The truth is that my wife survived a catastrophic accident, recovered her memory, contacted my family, and somehow everyone who should have helped her decided I didn't deserve to know."

Vanessa snapped.

"Because you were a disaster."

Noah recoiled.

Daniel's eyes sharpened.

Vanessa realized too late that Noah was listening.

She lowered her voice.

"You couldn't work. You couldn't sleep. You had panic attacks in grocery stores. You screamed at search coordinators. You drove to Vermont every weekend because you thought you'd somehow find her standing beside the highway."

Daniel stared at her.

"I loved her."

"You were destroying yourself."

"So you protected me by stealing my son's trust?"

Vanessa's face changed.

"We still don't know what happened to that money."

Daniel lifted the statement.

"It's attached to accounts you administered."

"On paper."

That answer caught him.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Daniel took one step closer.

"Vanessa."

She whispered, "Martin moved most of it."

Michael swore under his breath.

Daniel's mind raced.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I authorized transfers because he said they were required for asset restructuring."

"Almost two million dollars?"

"I trusted him."

Daniel laughed.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It's the truth."

"You blackmailed Laura for one hundred eighty-four thousand dollars."

Vanessa looked down.

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"Did Martin know she was alive before you did?"

Vanessa did not answer.

That was enough.

Daniel turned toward the cabinet again.

He began searching every folder.

Michael joined him.

Within minutes they found something.

A copy of a letter dated fourteen months earlier.

It was addressed to Martin Shaw.

The sender was a private neurologist representing Laura.

The letter explained that Laura Carter, previously presumed deceased, had recovered her identity and intended to restore her legal status.

Fourteen months.

Not eleven.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"You told me she contacted you eleven months ago."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel understood.

"Martin knew first."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

"What did he do?"

"He called me."

"Why you?"

"Because he said if Laura was declared alive again, the trust would be audited automatically."

Michael leaned against the cabinet.

Daniel felt the pieces moving into place.

Laura's legal death had triggered the trust.

Martin controlled much of the administrative process.

Money disappeared afterward.

Laura returning would expose everything.

Daniel looked at his sister.

"And instead of telling me, you helped him keep her hidden."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"He told me we could fix the accounts before anyone knew."

"We?"

"I didn't steal two million dollars."

"But you took Laura's money."

Vanessa cried now.

"I was drowning."

Daniel's face remained hard.

"My business was failing. I had loans. Martin knew. He offered me a way out."

There it was.

Not protection.

Not concern.

Not stability.

Money.

Daniel looked toward Noah.

His son was sitting on the stairs.

Listening.

Daniel hated Vanessa more in that moment than he ever thought possible.

Not because she had stolen.

Because she had taught Noah to believe love was dangerous.

Michael picked up another document.

"This has today's date."

Daniel took it.

It was a flight itinerary.

Passenger: Laura Carter.

Departure: 9:40 p.m.

Destination: Seattle.

Daniel checked the time.

8:21.

Vanessa looked at the page and went pale.

"Martin must have left it."

Daniel was already moving.

He grabbed Noah's shoes.

Then he stopped.

He looked at the muddy sneakers that had hidden Laura's voice for three weeks.

He knelt.

"Noah, do you want to come with me?"

The boy nodded immediately.

Daniel helped him into his socks and shoes.

The muddy soles did not matter.

Nothing about appearance mattered anymore.

Michael held up his truck keys.

"I'll drive. You're too angry."

Daniel almost argued.

Then he handed over the keys to his SUV instead.

Vanessa followed them outside.

"Daniel."

He turned.

She looked smaller than she had an hour earlier.

"If you find Laura, she may not want to come back."

Daniel stared at her.

"That will be her decision."

Vanessa swallowed.

"Not yours."

"Exactly."

He opened Noah's door.

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"I really did think I was protecting you at first."

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

"Maybe."

She seemed surprised.

Then he continued.

"But somewhere along the way, you discovered that protecting me was profitable."

He closed the door.

Michael started the engine.

As they pulled away, Noah looked back at Vanessa standing alone beneath the maple trees.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"If Mom doesn't want to stay, can I still tell her I remembered her?"

May you like

Daniel reached back and held his son's hand.

"That's the first thing we're going to tell her."
