Chapter 14 - Noah Finally Chose the Table)

Six months after the night at Bellweather Bistro, Michael Reed called Daniel.

"I need a favor."

Daniel was immediately suspicious.

"What?"

"Bring Noah to the restaurant Saturday."

Daniel looked at Laura.

They were sitting together on his back porch while Noah chased bubbles across the yard.

"Why?"

"You'll see."

"I hate surprises now."

Michael laughed.

"Understandable."

Laura held out her hand.

Daniel put the call on speaker.

Michael continued.

"We're reopening the front dining room after renovations."

Daniel waited.

"And?"

"And I want Noah to be the first guest."

Laura smiled.

Daniel looked toward his son.

"Why?"

Michael's voice softened.

"Because the last time he came here, an adult made him believe he didn't belong inside."

Daniel said nothing.

Michael continued.

"I'd like to correct the memory."

Saturday evening, Noah wore jeans, a clean button-down shirt and bright blue sneakers he had chosen himself.

Daniel looked at them.

"No mud?"

Noah grinned.

"Not yet."

Laura arrived wearing the crescent necklace.

She had started wearing it again two months earlier.

Daniel noticed every time.

They drove separately.

That was part of rebuilding slowly.

At Bellweather, Michael waited outside.

Not inside.

Outside.

Exactly where Noah had once stood alone.

Michael opened the glass door himself.

"Mr. Carter."

Noah looked behind him.

"My dad?"

Michael shook his head.

"You."

Noah grinned.

Michael bowed dramatically.

"Your table is ready."

Inside, several members of the Carter family waited.

Not everyone.

Daniel had learned that family size meant nothing if trust was absent.

The people present were the ones who had supported Noah afterward without demanding access to the drama.

An elderly aunt.

Two cousins.

Daniel's closest friend.

Laura's sister, who had flown in from Colorado after learning Laura was alive.

There was one empty chair.

Noah noticed.

"Who's sitting there?"

Michael smiled.

"You decide."

Noah looked around.

Then pulled the chair beside Laura.

He placed his dinosaur backpack on it.

"My backpack."

Everyone laughed.

Dinner began.

Michael served sparkling lemonade.

Noah ordered too much bread.

Laura stole one of Daniel's fries.

Daniel told her to stop.

She did it again.

For an hour, the restaurant became what it should have been from the beginning.

A place to eat.

Talk.

Laugh.

Not a stage.

Not a test.

Not a photograph designed to prove perfection.

Halfway through dessert, Noah looked beneath the table.

Daniel noticed.

"What?"

Noah looked toward Michael.

"Do you still have the bag?"

Michael knew exactly what he meant.

The paper takeout bag had been kept with the reservation file as part of the investigation.

After the case no longer needed it, Michael had asked Daniel whether he wanted it.

Daniel had said no.

Michael apparently had not thrown it away.

He went to his office.

He returned carrying a new paper bag.

Not the old evidence.

This one contained something else.

He set it beside Noah.

The boy looked inside.

A pair of tiny framed photographs.

One showed the reservation picture from the secret meeting.

This time the image was uncropped.

Laura sat beside Noah.

Vanessa stood farther away.

Noah held his lemonade.

The second photograph showed the family sitting at the table tonight.

Michael had taken it from across the room.

Noah stared.

"Can I keep both?"

Laura looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"Of course."

Noah studied the older photograph.

Then the new one.

In the first picture, he looked uncertain.

In the second, he was laughing.

He placed them side by side.

"I like this one better."

Laura touched his shoulder.

"So do I."

Daniel looked toward the restaurant windows.

Six months earlier, he had seen Noah through that glass.

Barefoot.

Alone.

Trying not to cry.

The memory still made his chest tighten.

Noah followed his gaze.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"You're doing the sad face."

Daniel smiled.

"What sad face?"

"The one where your eyebrows look weird."

Laura laughed.

Daniel looked offended.

"My eyebrows are normal."

Noah turned to his mother.

"They're weird."

"Very weird."

Daniel pointed at both of them.

"This alliance is concerning."

Noah laughed.

Then he became serious.

"Dad?"

"What?"

"If somebody ever puts me outside again, can I just come back in?"

Daniel looked at him.

"You don't wait for permission."

Noah nodded.

Laura added, "And if someone tells you that you don't belong somewhere because of dirty shoes, messy hair, or anything else, you tell us."

"What if it's a fancy place?"

Daniel smiled.

"Especially then."

Noah looked satisfied.

He returned to his dessert.

Later, when dinner ended, he ran toward the front door.

Then stopped.

He looked back.

Laura and Daniel were walking together.

Not holding hands.

Not yet.

Noah pointed toward the sidewalk.

"Come on."

They followed him outside.

Noah stepped onto the same section of pavement where he had once waited barefoot.

He looked down.

Then deliberately stepped into a shallow puddle.

Water splashed across his bright blue sneakers.

Daniel stared.

Laura covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Noah looked up.

"They're dirty."

Daniel nodded solemnly.

"Tragic."

"Can I still go back inside?"

Michael stood in the doorway.

"Absolutely."

Noah grinned.

May you like

Then he ran inside with wet shoes.

Nobody stopped him.
