Chapter 5 - A Marriage Built on Silence

Elena hid the photograph inside a locked drawer at the penthouse.
She told herself she needed time.
Adrian was already under pressure from the Beaumont merger, a federal review of Vale Logistics, and a series of unexplained financial withdrawals from the foundation.
If she showed him the file immediately, he would abandon everything and declare war on his own board.
That was exactly what the person behind the photograph might want.
Still, secrecy changed the rhythm of their marriage.
Adrian noticed her checking door locks twice.
He noticed when she stopped drinking tea after discovering a bitter smell in a new package.
He noticed the way she watched every car behind them.
One night, he found her standing in the nursery they had not yet announced.
The room was unfinished. A wooden crib waited in pieces against the wall. Paint samples covered the table.
Adrian wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“You are afraid.”
“I’m pregnant. I’m allowed to be nervous.”
“This is not nervous.”
She looked at their reflection in the window.
“I received another note.”
His arms tightened.
“When?”
“Today.”
“What did it say?”
Elena chose a small piece of the truth.
“That the Vale family does not marry servants.”
Adrian turned her to face him.
“Where is it?”
“I destroyed it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I knew you would react like this.”
“Like a husband whose wife is being threatened?”
“Like a man who owns a security company and forgets that not every danger can be solved with locked doors.”
His expression softened, but the anger remained.
“You are not going back to work at the ball.”
“I am coordinating the final service plan.”
“You are carrying our child.”
“I am also capable of choosing what I do.”
“I know.”
“Then do not turn protection into control.”
Adrian stepped back.
The pain in his face made Elena regret her words.
He had spent his childhood in a house where love was used to justify commands. She knew how deeply he feared becoming like his father.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“No. You are right.”
He sat on the edge of the unfinished crib box.
“I don’t know how to keep you safe without trying to control every variable.”
“You can start by trusting me.”
“I do trust you.”
The sentence struck harder because Elena knew she had not earned it that day.
She sat beside him.
“After the ball, we tell everyone.”
“About the marriage?”
“And the baby.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Are you certain?”
“I don’t want our child born into a secret.”
He took her hand and kissed the ring she wore on a chain beneath her uniform.
“After the ball,” he promised.
The next morning, Adrian ordered Marcus to investigate the anonymous notes.
Marcus traced one photograph to a camera hidden across from the penthouse windows. The apartment that contained it had been rented through a shell company.
That company belonged to Beaumont Security Consulting.
When Adrian confronted Cassandra, she laughed.
“My father’s bank owns hundreds of shell companies.”
“One of them photographed my home.”
“Perhaps you should close your curtains.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Do not go near Elena.”
Cassandra’s eyes sharpened at the name.
“So that is who she is.”
Adrian realized his mistake too late.
Cassandra smiled again.
“Thank you.”
She ended the call.
Within an hour, Elena’s employee schedule for the Winter Charity Ball was delivered to Cassandra’s private office.
