Chapter 11 - The Winter Charity Ball

The ballroom opened at seven.
White orchids climbed the railings. Artificial snow drifted inside glass columns. Musicians performed beneath the chandelier while guests donated amounts large enough to fund entire hospitals.
Elena wore her black-and-white uniform.
Her wedding ring remained hidden on a chain beneath the collar.
Adrian greeted donors from the upper landing. Every few minutes, his gaze found Elena in the crowd.
She answered with the smallest nod.
Cassandra arrived in metallic gold.
The room turned toward her as cameras flashed.
She approached Adrian before the press wall.
“You look worried.”
“You look overdressed for a criminal investigation.”
Her smile remained perfect.
“Careful. People are listening.”
“I hope they are.”
Cassandra lowered her voice.
“Did Elena tell you what she took from the east wing?”
“Yes.”
The answer unsettled her.
“All of it?”
Adrian watched the shift in her expression.
“You were hoping she had not.”
Cassandra raised a champagne glass.
“I was hoping she understood that curiosity can be dangerous.”
“She understands danger better than you understand consequences.”
Across the ballroom, Elena moved toward the ice display.
Midnight was still four hours away, but the folder inside appeared closer to the surface as the sculpture slowly melted.
A temporary server named Liam approached carrying a tray.
“Mrs. Vale,” he whispered.
Elena froze.
He knew who she was.
“Who sent you?”
“I can’t say.”
“Then walk away.”
“They have my sister.”
Elena looked at him.
Liam’s hand trembled beneath the tray.
“I was supposed to push you into the display at midnight. Cassandra paid me, but another man threatened my family if I refused.”
“Who?”
“I never saw his face. He wore a Vale ring.”
Victor.
Or someone using Victor’s symbol.
Liam glanced toward the staircase.
“You need to leave before the final speech.”
“Why?”
“The ice display contains more than a file.”
Elena’s alarm vibrated beneath her sleeve. Marcus had seen Liam approach and was moving through the crowd.
Liam stepped back.
A waiter collided with him.
The tray fell.
Guests turned at the crash.
By the time Marcus reached Elena, Liam had disappeared into the service corridor.
“What did he say?” Marcus asked.
“That the sculpture contains something else.”
Marcus signaled the technical team.
Before they could examine it, the ballroom lights dimmed for the charity presentation.
Victor stepped onto the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we celebrate a legacy of protection.”
Adrian’s face changed at the word.
Victor continued.
“A legacy built by families willing to make difficult choices for the future.”
Behind him, the screen displayed photographs of Vale hospitals and shelters.
Then the presentation glitched.
For less than one second, the divided-circle symbol filled the screen.
Elena saw it.
So did Victor.
His speech stopped.
The image vanished.
Victor recovered quickly, but a voice sounded in Elena’s earpiece.
Marcus.
“Mrs. Vale, someone accessed the security system from inside the east service room.”
Elena turned toward the corridor.
Cassandra blocked her path.
“You are not going anywhere.”
“Move.”
Cassandra’s smile was gone.
“Do you know how many years I waited for Adrian to understand what was expected of him?”
“This is not about marriage.”
“It became about survival the moment you entered that wing.”
“What is inside the ice?”
Cassandra’s eyes flickered toward it.
“You truly don’t know.”
Behind Elena, the musicians began playing again.
May you like
Cassandra stepped closer.
“Then you are even more disposable than I thought.”
