Chapter 15 - The Call from the Dead

Three days after the ball, the city remained obsessed with Cassandra Beaumont’s arrest.

News channels replayed the moment Adrian covered Elena with his coat. Commentators debated the secret marriage, the hidden twin, the stolen foundation money, and the fall of two powerful families.

Cassandra’s attorneys claimed she had been manipulated.

Reginald denied knowledge of Project Winter.

Victor resigned from the Vale Global board but refused to leave the city.

Liam entered protective custody.

The public believed the story had reached its ending.

Inside Adrian and Elena’s penthouse, it had barely begun.

Elena rested in the nursery while Adrian assembled the crib.

He had never built furniture before. The instructions confused him more than international acquisitions.

“You put that piece backward,” Elena said.

“I did not.”

“The label is facing the wall.”

“The label lacks vision.”

She laughed for the first time since the ball.

Adrian looked at her, and the sound seemed to return something he had lost.

Cassandra would face trial.

The Beaumont merger was dead.

The charity funds had been recovered through emergency court orders.

The staff members who had remained silent while Elena knelt on the floor had been interviewed, and several senior event managers were dismissed for helping Cassandra control the service team.

Adrian announced his marriage publicly, but Elena refused the title society immediately tried to give her.

She did not want to become “the maid who married a billionaire.”

She wanted to lead the foundation’s new survivor program.

Adrian supported her without argument.

For a few hours, their life seemed capable of becoming ordinary.

Then Marcus arrived.

He carried a sealed evidence bag.

“We found this inside the base of the ice sculpture.”

He removed a small black device.

“A second transmitter,” he explained. “The first activated the Project Winter files. This one never went off.”

“Why?” Adrian asked.

“It required a voice code.”

“Whose voice?”

Marcus placed the device on the table.

A small screen lit up.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED: EVELYN VALE.

Elena sat straighter.

“His mother is dead.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“At 2:14 this morning, the device received an incoming call from a private satellite network.”

“Did anyone answer?”

“It answered automatically.”

Marcus played the recording.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman spoke.

Her voice was older than the one on the cassette, but it carried the same measured calm.

“Adrian, if you are hearing this, Elias has already returned.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the table.

The recording continued.

“Do not let him open the original succession vault. He does not know what Richard placed inside him.”

Elena and Marcus exchanged a look.

The woman took a breath.

“And do not trust the child who comes wearing your face.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then the penthouse security alarm sounded.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

A camera feed appeared on the wall screen.

A man stood inside the private elevator.

He looked exactly like Adrian.

In his arms, he carried a sleeping boy no older than six.

The child had Adrian’s dark hair.

Around his neck hung the divided-circle symbol.

The elevator doors opened.

The man stepped into the foyer and looked directly at the camera.

“Hello, brother,” he said.

Then he lowered his gaze to the child.

“I brought back the heir they made before either of us.”

The penthouse lights went dark.

And from inside the nursery, Elena heard the window unlock.
