Chapter 12 - The Heiress Makes Her Move

Cassandra had spent her entire life mistaking fear for respect.

She believed the guests would protect her because their accounts depended on Beaumont Bank.

She believed the staff would obey because their jobs depended on families like hers.

She believed Adrian would eventually choose the world built for him over the woman who had entered through a service door.

Elena represented more than romantic rejection.

She represented proof that Cassandra’s inheritance could not purchase every outcome.

When Elena tried to walk around her, Cassandra caught her arm.

“Let go.”

“Not until you return what you stole.”

“I took nothing from you.”

“You took my future.”

“Adrian was never your future. He was your arrangement.”

Cassandra’s nails tightened against Elena’s sleeve.

“You think a courthouse paper makes you equal to me?”

“No. I thought we were equal before I signed it.”

The answer struck exactly where Elena intended.

Cassandra’s face twisted.

She looked toward Liam, who had reappeared behind the ice display.

He shook his head.

He would not do it.

Cassandra released Elena and moved toward him.

“You were paid for one task.”

“My sister is safe now,” Liam said.

Cassandra stopped.

Marcus’s team had found her.

Liam continued, louder this time.

“I’m not touching her.”

Guests began to notice the confrontation.

Cassandra saw control slipping away.

She turned toward a second temporary server and gave a small signal.

The server moved behind Elena.

Elena heard the step and turned.

A hand struck her shoulder.

The force was not enough to throw her across the room, but the marble beneath her shoes was wet from the melting display.

She slipped.

Her side struck the lower edge of the ice platform, and she fell to her knees among scattered flowers and shards of decorative ice.

The ballroom gasped.

The second server disappeared into the crowd.

Cassandra moved forward before anyone else could react.

She stood over Elena, transforming the attack into an accusation.

“Staff who embarrass me don’t belong here.”

Elena pressed one hand against her stomach.

The baby moved.

Relief came with pain.

“Please,” she said, buying time for Marcus. “I didn’t touch the ice display.”

Cassandra smiled down at her.

For one terrible moment, the room allowed it.

Then Adrian entered.

His question shattered the social order Cassandra had depended upon.

“Then why is my wife on the floor?”

The revelation traveled through the ballroom faster than any rumor.

Adrian covered Elena with his coat.

Marcus arrived with the tablet.

The recordings played.

Cassandra’s order filled the speakers.

The gold-clad heiress went pale as guests heard her instruct Liam to make Elena fall.

Then a second clip played.

Victor’s voice appeared to answer.

“Do what is necessary. The file cannot leave the ballroom.”

Adrian stared at his uncle.

Victor stood near the stage, stunned.

“That is not my voice.”

The security chief checked the audio reading.

“It matches your archived recordings at ninety-eight percent.”

“It was created.”

“By whom?” Adrian demanded.

Victor looked toward the ice display.

A crack traveled through its center.

The sculpture split.

The folder fell onto the marble.

So did a small metal container attached to a timer.

Ten seconds remained.

Guests screamed and rushed toward the exits.

Marcus’s officers moved forward.

Victor shouted, “Do not open it.”

The timer reached zero.

The container released a cloud of silver vapor.

Adrian threw himself over Elena.

But the vapor did not poison the room.

It activated every screen.

The Project Winter archives appeared around the ballroom.

Photographs.

Medical charts.

Payments.

Names.

At the center was an image of Adrian and Elias as children.

The message followed.
