THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - Eleanor's Key)

Claire refused to say where the key was while Vivian could hear.

Ethan understood.

He guided her through the passage toward the library.

Grant followed.

Vivian ordered him to stop.

"Let them go."

Grant stared at her.

"Mother."

"I said let them go."

Her calm frightened him more than shouting would have.

Ethan brought Claire into the library.

She stopped at the doorway.

Her eyes moved across everything.

Books.

Lamps.

Windows.

The storm.

She walked toward the glass.

Rain streaked the panes.

Claire touched the window.

"Is that real?"

Ethan stood several feet away.

"The rain?"

"The outside."

"Yes."

She pressed her palm to the cold glass.

"I haven't seen lightning through a window since I was little."

Ethan said nothing.

Claire looked around.

Then froze when she saw the family photographs.

She approached the picture of herself at five.

Her fingers hovered above it.

"That's my dress."

"You remember it?"

"My mother bought it."

Ethan watched her face change.

"She said yellow made me look brave."

Claire took the photograph from the table.

Behind it was the tape where Ethan had found her note.

"You found this."

"Yes."

"I put it there when I was eight."

"How?"

"Mrs. Doyle."

"She helped you?"

"Sometimes."

Claire sat.

The physical freedom seemed to be overwhelming her.

Ethan kept his voice gentle.

"Where is Eleanor's key?"

Claire looked at him for a long time.

Then she lifted her braid.

At the end, several strands had been wrapped repeatedly around something small.

She carefully unwound them.

A tiny brass key fell into her palm.

"I kept it in my hair."

"For twenty years?"

"Not always."

She smiled faintly for the first time.

"I changed hiding places."

"What does it open?"

"I don't know."

"Your mother gave it to you?"

"The night before she died."

Claire closed her hand around it.

"She told me if something happened, I should find the swan."

"The swan?"

"That's all."

Ethan searched the library.

There were birds carved in furniture.

Birds painted in landscapes.

No obvious swan.

Then Claire looked toward an old portrait.

It showed Eleanor Bennett sitting beside a lake.

A white swan floated behind her.

Claire stood.

"That painting used to be in Mommy's room."

They moved it.

Behind the frame was a narrow wall safe.

Claire stared.

Ethan looked at the key.

"Try it."

Her hand shook as she inserted it.

The lock turned.

Inside were three items.

A cassette tape.

A sealed envelope.

And a small ledger.

Claire whispered, "Mommy."

Ethan opened the envelope.

The handwriting was elegant.

Claire recognized it instantly.

"My mother wrote that."

The letter began with Claire's name.

Ethan handed it to her.

She read silently.

Then tears began falling.

"What does it say?" he asked.

Claire passed it to him.

Ethan read.

Eleanor had discovered Vivian stealing from the Bennett family trust.

She had documented transfers, false invoices, and shell companies.

She feared Vivian had learned she planned to report everything.

The final paragraph was written directly to Claire.

If you are reading this when you are older, I hope I was wrong to be afraid. If I was right, remember this. Nothing Vivian tells you can change who you are. You are my daughter. You are loved. You are not responsible for the choices adults make around you.

Claire covered her mouth.

For twenty years Vivian had told her she killed her mother.

Eleanor had left words that destroyed the lie.

Ethan opened the ledger.

Dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Millions transferred into entities controlled by Vivian.

"This can prove motive."

Claire looked at the cassette.

"What's on that?"

"We need a player."

"There was one downstairs."

Ethan looked up.

"Where?"

"My mother's music room."

The music room had been sealed.

Mrs. Doyle knew where the key was.

Ten minutes later they found an old cassette deck in a cabinet.

The tape hissed.

Then Eleanor Bennett's voice filled the room.

"If anyone is hearing this, Vivian has probably already found out that I know."

Claire stopped breathing.

She had not heard her mother's voice in twenty years.

Eleanor described the theft.

The threats.

Dr. Halden's involvement in falsifying medical prescriptions.

Then she said something else.

"Vivian believes Claire's inheritance is the only obstacle between her and full control of the Bennett assets. If anything happens to me, Claire must be removed from Vivian's guardianship immediately."

Claire closed her eyes.

Eleanor continued.

"I have also discovered something concerning Grant."

At his name Ethan looked toward the door.

The recording went on.

"Grant has been moving money for Vivian through a company called North Crown Holdings."

Ethan knew the name.

His blood ran cold.

North Crown Holdings was one of the companies involved in the deal Vivian wanted Hale Capital to finance.

The tape ended.

Ethan immediately called Marcus.

"Search North Crown Holdings."

"I already did."

"What did you find?"

"It's bad."

"How bad?"

"The Ashfords owe people money."

"Who?"

"Private lenders. Offshore entities. Possibly criminal."

"Amount?"

"At least one hundred eighty million."

Ethan looked at Claire.

"So the trust transfer isn't greed."

"It's survival."

A crash came from the hallway.

Ethan opened the door.

Mrs. Doyle lay on the marble floor.

Grant stood over her.

In one hand he held a fireplace poker.

In the other he held Ethan's car keys.

Grant looked toward Claire.

His face was no longer nervous.

It was desperate.

"The bridge is open."

Ethan stepped forward.

May you like

Grant smiled.

"But none of you are leaving."
