Chapter 11 - The Second Plan)

The life insurance policy changed the investigation.
Until then prosecutors had evidence of kidnapping, fraud, coercion, financial crimes, and possible murder related to Eleanor and David Bennett.
Now they had evidence suggesting another crime had been approaching.
Claire's.
The policy had been purchased through an offshore trust controlled indirectly by Samuel Voss.
The timing mattered.
Claire's twenty fifth birthday.
The probate transfer.
Vivian's debt.
Everything converged.
Marcus visited the hospital that afternoon.
He met Claire in a private conference room.
"This is Marcus Reed."
Ethan gestured.
"My attorney."
Claire looked at Marcus.
"Is he expensive?"
Marcus smiled.
"Unfortunately."
Claire looked at Ethan.
"Why is he here?"
"Because legally, you're about to become a very complicated person."
"I already am."
Marcus laughed.
"I think we'll get along."
He placed several documents on the table.
"No signature today."
Claire visibly relaxed.
"Good."
"These are explanations only."
He showed her the trust structure.
Eleanor Bennett had inherited extensive property, investments, and shares from Claire's grandfather.
Claire was the primary beneficiary.
The current estimated value exceeded seven hundred million dollars.
Claire stared at the number.
"No."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"I lived in a room with one light bulb."
Neither man spoke.
Claire laughed once.
It sounded broken.
"Seven hundred million dollars."
"Approximately."
"And Mrs. Doyle worried about whether there was enough soup."
Ethan watched her.
She pushed the documents away.
"I don't want it."
Marcus remained calm.
"You don't have to decide anything."
"It's why they killed my parents."
"Probably part of the reason."
"It's why they kept me."
"Yes."
Claire stood.
"Then I don't want it."
She left the conference room.
Ethan followed her into the courtyard.
"Claire."
She turned.
"You want me to keep it."
"I want you not to make permanent decisions on the worst day of your life."
"It's blood money."
"No."
"My parents died because of it."
"Your parents died because Vivian made choices."
Claire looked away.
Ethan continued.
"If someone steals your house and hurts you during the robbery, the house doesn't become theirs morally because they were willing to commit violence."
"It's different."
"Maybe."
Claire stared at the tree.
"What would you do?"
"Take it."
"Of course you would."
Ethan almost smiled.
"Then I'd spend the rest of my life making sure the people who tried to steal it watched me use it better than they ever could."
Claire finally looked at him.
That idea stayed with her.
Later that evening Detective Laura Mills arrived.
"We found evidence Vivian planned to move you."
"Where?"
"Property in Canada owned through North Crown."
Claire's hands tightened.
"When?"
"Within a week."
Ethan asked, "After the probate hearing?"
"Likely."
Detective Mills placed photographs on the table.
A remote house.
A private airstrip.
Medical equipment.
Claire stared.
"What kind of medical equipment?"
The detective hesitated.
"Sedatives."
Claire went still.
"And after that?"
"We don't know."
But everyone knew.
The insurance policy answered enough.
Claire walked to the window.
Vivian had stolen twenty years.
She had planned to steal the rest.
"What about Samuel Voss?" Ethan asked.
"We're looking for him."
"Missing?"
"Since this morning."
"Passport?"
"Not used."
Claire turned.
"Does he know I'm alive?"
"Almost certainly."
"Then he's afraid."
"Yes."
She looked at Ethan.
"Good."
That night Claire could not sleep.
The hospital assigned a security officer outside her room.
At two eighteen in the morning she woke to a soft mechanical beep.
Someone stood beside her bed.
Not Ethan.
Not a nurse she recognized.
A man in blue medical scrubs.
He held a syringe.
Claire's old instincts returned before conscious thought.
She grabbed the metal water pitcher and swung.
The man ducked.
Claire screamed.
The security officer burst in.
The stranger ran toward the bathroom.
He never reached it.
The officer tackled him.
Nurses rushed in.
Ethan arrived twelve minutes later after Claire called him.
She was sitting upright.
Angry more than frightened.
"They sent someone."
Detective Mills nodded.
"The man has no hospital employment record."
Claire looked at the syringe sealed inside an evidence bag.
"What was in it?"
"We'll test it."
Ethan stood near the door.
Claire looked at him.
"Vivian is in custody."
"Yes."
"Grant is in custody."
"Yes."
"Then who sent him?"
Detective Mills exchanged a look with Ethan.
Claire answered herself.
"Samuel Voss."
The captured man initially refused to speak.
Then police found a prepaid phone in his car.
One message had arrived three hours earlier.
Complete the Ashford matter before she remembers the lake house.
Claire read the message.
Her face changed.
"The lake house."
Ethan watched her.
May you like
"You remember something?"
Claire whispered, "I remember my mother hiding documents there."
