Chapter 10 - The World Outside)

Claire's first sunrise outside Ashford Manor was not dramatic.
There were no reporters.
No crowds.
No music.
Only a hospital courtyard.
A maple tree.
A wooden bench.
And a paper cup of tea cooling between her hands.
She sat beneath the tree wearing borrowed clothes.
Shoes felt strange, so she had removed them.
Ethan stood several feet away.
Doctors had warned everyone not to overwhelm her.
Claire had undergone examinations throughout the night.
Malnutrition.
Vitamin deficiency.
Old untreated fractures.
Scarring.
Nothing immediately life threatening.
Psychologically, the doctors used cautious language.
Complex trauma.
Long term coercive control.
Severe social deprivation.
But mentally alert.
Oriented.
Capable of understanding where she was.
Vivian's strategy of dismissing Claire as incompetent had begun collapsing almost immediately.
The authorities had separated Vivian and Grant.
Both had lawyers.
Mrs. Doyle had voluntarily given a statement.
Anna had turned over her recording.
Dr. Halden had finally agreed to cooperate after learning police had recovered Eleanor's ledger.
Ethan walked closer.
"Tea okay?"
Claire looked at the cup.
"It's different."
"Different from what?"
"What I had."
"Better?"
She considered.
"No."
Ethan smiled.
"First honest review."
Claire looked at the hospital courtyard.
Cars moved beyond the gate.
People walked with phones in their hands.
A delivery driver laughed near the entrance.
Everything fascinated and frightened her.
"How many people know?"
"About you?"
She nodded.
"A lot soon."
Claire's expression tightened.
"We can limit what reaches you."
"You can't stop newspapers."
"No."
"Internet?"
"No."
She stared at him.
"I don't understand the internet."
"Nobody really does."
Claire almost smiled.
Then looked down.
"What happens now?"
"Police investigate."
"Vivian goes to prison?"
"If the evidence proves the charges."
"Why can't they just know?"
"Law is slower than truth."
Claire frowned.
"I don't like that."
"Most people don't."
She looked toward him.
"And Grant?"
"He confessed to enough last night that his attorney is probably having a terrible morning."
Claire became quiet.
Ethan sat at the opposite end of the bench.
"Mrs. Doyle wants to see you."
"No."
"Okay."
"You think I should."
"No."
"You're lying."
Ethan considered.
"I think she did terrible things and some decent things afterward."
"That doesn't cancel them."
"No."
Claire looked at the tree.
"When I was little, I used to imagine escaping."
"What did you imagine?"
"Big things."
"Like?"
"Running into town. Finding a police officer. Everyone realizing Vivian was evil."
She smiled bitterly.
"I thought it would feel different."
"How does it feel?"
"Like I'm still in the room."
Ethan nodded.
A therapist had told him not to give simplistic reassurance.
So he did not.
After a while Claire asked, "Why did you stay?"
"At the manor?"
"Yes."
"You asked me to."
"Before that."
Ethan looked away.
"I don't know."
"That's not true."
He considered his answer.
"My younger sister disappeared for six hours when she was nine."
Claire looked at him.
"They found her?"
"Yes. She had followed a dog into a wooded area."
"Six hours."
"Longest six hours of my life."
Claire waited.
Ethan continued.
"When I heard someone behind that wall, I thought about my parents searching for my sister."
"And you thought about my mother."
"Eventually."
Claire nodded.
"Is your sister alive?"
"Yes."
"Does she have children?"
"Two."
"Does she know about me?"
"She knows I found someone who needed help."
Claire absorbed that.
An investigator approached.
"Ms. Bennett?"
Claire tensed.
Ethan looked at her.
"You can tell him to leave."
The investigator stopped several feet away.
"We recovered something from Ashford Manor that we think belongs to you."
He held out a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a small yellow dress.
Claire stopped breathing.
"The dress from the photograph," Ethan said.
Claire nodded.
She reached toward it but stopped before touching the bag.
"Where?"
"The attic."
The investigator continued.
"There was a storage trunk containing childhood items. Your clothes. Toys. School papers."
Claire looked confused.
"Why would she keep them?"
"We don't know."
Then the investigator hesitated.
"There's something else."
He opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire looked at it.
Her expression changed.
It showed Vivian standing beside a young man Claire did not recognize.
Behind them was a sign for North Crown Holdings.
The date was from eleven years earlier.
The investigator tapped the man.
"His name is Samuel Voss."
Ethan recognized it.
A private lender tied to Vivian's debts.
Claire stared at the image.
"So?"
The investigator looked at Ethan.
Then back to Claire.
"Mr. Voss visited Ashford Manor repeatedly during your captivity."
Claire's face went pale.
"I don't remember him."
"You may not have met him."
"Then why does it matter?"
The investigator placed another document beside the photograph.
A life insurance policy.
Beneficiary.
Samuel Voss.
Insured person.
Claire Eleanor Bennett.
Coverage amount.
Two hundred fifty million dollars.
Claire whispered, "She insured me?"
The investigator nodded.
"Three months before your twenty fifth birthday."
Ethan understood the implication immediately.
Claire had survived captivity for twenty years because Vivian needed her alive.
But the trust transfer deadline had changed the calculation.
Claire looked at Ethan.
"If you hadn't stayed because of the storm..."
She could not finish.
Ethan looked at the insurance policy.
May you like
The realization was cold.
Vivian had never intended Claire to leave Ashford Manor alive.
