Chapter 11 - The Girl in the Hamper)

After Lily whispered that Charles had given her to Vanessa, nobody moved.

The broken ceramic vase lay across the floor.

Emma's cheek burned from the slap.

Vanessa stood in the doorway with a thin cut near her hairline where the vase had struck, but she was steady.

Charles held Lily.

His arms began to tremble.

Emma looked at him.

"What did she mean?"

Charles closed his eyes.

Vanessa answered.

"He knows."

"Shut up."

Charles's voice shocked everyone.

Vanessa laughed.

"Still pretending you're the hero?"

"I said shut up."

Lily looked frightened.

Charles immediately softened.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart."

Emma stepped toward him.

"Tell me."

Charles lowered Lily.

She moved behind Emma.

He looked suddenly much older.

"The day Olivia came home from treatment, Vanessa already had the emergency guardianship order."

"We know."

"No."

Charles shook his head.

"You don't know how she got it."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Charles continued.

"I signed an affidavit."

Emma stared.

"What affidavit?"

"I told the court Olivia had abandoned Lily."

Lily began crying again.

Emma felt sick.

"You knew she hadn't."

Charles nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Vanessa showed me the psychiatric report. Because Matthew was threatening to file for custody. Because Vanessa told me Olivia would take Lily and disappear."

"That doesn't explain lying."

"No."

Charles looked at Lily.

"There is no explanation that makes it right."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Don't act noble now."

Charles looked at her.

"I'm not."

Then he turned back to Emma.

"Three months later, Olivia challenged the guardianship."

Emma waited.

"I was supposed to testify."

"Against her?"

"Yes."

"Did you?"

"Once."

Olivia had mentioned it.

Emma clenched her jaw.

"What did you say?"

"I said Vanessa had given Lily stability and that returning her to Olivia would be dangerous."

Lily whispered, "Was Liv dangerous?"

Charles shook his head.

"I didn't know."

"Then why did you say it?"

His eyes filled.

"Because I was afraid."

Lily moved closer to Emma.

Charles continued.

"Later I learned Vanessa had exaggerated the report. Then I learned Matthew had lied. Then Olivia told me the consent signature wasn't hers."

"And you still didn't fix it."

"No."

Emma's voice rose.

"Why?"

Vanessa answered.

"Because by then he loved Lily more than he loved the truth."

Charles looked at her.

Vanessa smiled again.

"He was terrified a judge would take Lily away from all of us."

Charles said nothing.

Emma realized Vanessa was right about that part.

He had let guilt become another excuse.

Vanessa walked toward Lily.

"We're leaving."

Emma stepped in front of her.

"No."

Vanessa reached for Lily.

Emma blocked her.

Vanessa raised her hand.

Charles grabbed her wrist.

"Don't."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Take your hand off me."

"No."

Something passed between them.

Six years of fear.

Six years of obedience.

Then Charles let go.

He pointed toward the stairs.

"Leave."

Vanessa looked at Lily.

"Come with me."

Lily shook her head.

"You're confused."

"No."

"I'm your mother."

Lily clung to Emma's shirt.

Vanessa's face hardened.

"I fed you. I dressed you. I sat up when you were sick."

Lily cried.

Emma felt sympathy trying to enter the room.

Then Lily pulled up her sleeve.

A bruise showed above her arm.

"You hurt me."

Vanessa stopped.

Charles stared at the mark.

"What happened?"

Lily looked at Vanessa.

"She squeezed me because I said I wanted Liv."

Charles's face changed.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

"She bruises easily."

Emma turned to her.

"You locked her in a hamper."

"She was having a tantrum."

"She's six."

"Exactly."

Emma could not believe what she was hearing.

Charles pulled out his phone.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you calling?"

"Margaret."

"Your lawyer?"

"Yes."

Vanessa laughed.

"What is she going to do?"

Charles looked at Lily's arm.

"Document this."

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

She moved toward the stairs.

Emma blocked her path long enough for Lily to stay behind Charles.

Vanessa stopped.

"You think Olivia will save her?"

Emma answered.

"I think Lily deserves the chance to know her."

"You don't know Olivia."

"Neither does Lily. Because of you."

Vanessa's eyes turned toward Charles.

"This is your fault."

He nodded.

"Yes."

The agreement disarmed her.

Charles continued.

"Which means I will spend the rest of my life correcting it."

Vanessa stared.

Then she reached into her pocket.

Emma tensed.

Vanessa pulled out a phone.

She held it up.

"You should hear something before you decide Olivia is innocent."

Charles frowned.

Vanessa tapped the screen.

A woman's voice filled the hallway.

Olivia.

Crying.

"I can't do this anymore. Sometimes I look at Lily and I think she'd be safer if I disappeared."

Lily froze.

Vanessa watched her face.

"You hear that?"

Emma felt Lily's hand loosen.

Vanessa continued the recording.

Olivia's voice shook.

"I am scared of myself. I don't trust what I might do when I haven't slept."

Lily began crying.

Vanessa stopped the recording.

"Your perfect mother."

Emma stepped toward her.

"When was that recorded?"

Vanessa said nothing.

"When?"

Charles asked.

Vanessa slipped the phone away.

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

Olivia had been ill after childbirth.

The recording could be from that period.

Emma looked at Lily.

"Being scared doesn't mean she didn't love you."

Vanessa laughed.

"You really believe that?"

Emma turned on her.

"She asked for help. You turned the worst moment of her life into a weapon."

Vanessa's smile vanished.

Then another voice came from behind her.

"She's right."

Everyone turned.

Olivia stood at the top of the stairs.

She had entered through the still open front door with Charles's lawyer beside her.

Olivia looked directly at Vanessa.

"I was sick."

Her eyes moved to Lily.

"But I never stopped loving my daughter."

Lily stared at her.

Vanessa's face went white.

Olivia stepped closer.

"And that recording isn't your evidence."

Vanessa frowned.

Olivia continued.

"It's mine."

Emma looked between them.

Olivia lifted her phone.

"I made it during treatment for my therapist."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

May you like

Olivia's voice hardened.

"And I still have the full recording."
