Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Apology Emily No Longer Needed
The police arrived twenty minutes later. No one cheered. No one shouted. The hall remained heavy with shame as officers spoke with Thomas, Olivia, Samantha, Daniel from security, and Emily.Ryan was not dragged away dramatically. He was simply questioned, cornered by facts, and escorted out when the officers determined there was enough evidence to continue the investigation. That quietness made it worse. He had imagined himself leaving the wedding with applause, wealth, and a beautiful bride.Instead, he left through the side doors while guests watched in silence.Margaret tried to follow him, but Henry stopped her.“Let him face one thing alone,” he said.Margaret turned to Emily. For the first time that day, she looked old.“Emily,” she whispered, “I didn’t know he would hurt Lily.”Emily held her daughter’s hand.“But you knew he hurt people,” she said. “You just didn’t care when it was me.”Margaret flinched.Charles stepped forward. “We made mistakes.”Emily looked at both of her parents.Mistakes.Such a small word for years of being dismissed, blamed, and robbed of her father’s trust.“You didn’t make mistakes,” Emily said. “You made choices.”Neither of them answered.Emily realized she had waited her whole life for an apology from people who only regretted being exposed. And suddenly, she did not need it anymore. She bent down and fixed Lily’s satin bow.“Come on, sweetheart,” she said. “We’re going home.”Henry reached for her hand.“No,” he said gently. “First, we are going to my lawyer.”Emily looked at him.Henry smiled.“It is time your father’s wishes were honored.”
