Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Bride Removes the Ring
Olivia stood in front of Ryan beneath the flower arch where they were supposed to become husband and wife. Her engagement ring shone on her finger.Ryan looked at it like it was the last piece of his future.“Olivia,” he said, softening his voice. “Please. I made mistakes, but I love you.”Emily almost laughed. She had heard that tone before. Ryan used it whenever anger failed. He became gentle when he needed something.Olivia looked at him for a long time. Then she removed the ring.Ryan’s face collapsed.“No,” he said.Olivia placed the ring on the altar table.“I was ready to marry a man who didn’t exist,” she said. “The man I loved was honest, loyal, and brave. You are none of those things.”Ryan shook his head. “Your father is turning you against me.”“No,” Olivia said. “A security camera did that.”A few guests looked away.Samantha stood silent near the exit, guarded by hotel staff. Margaret cried softly into a handkerchief, but Emily could not tell whether she was crying for Ryan’s victims or for Ryan’s ruined image.Thomas approached his daughter.“We’ll handle the guests,” he said.Olivia nodded, then turned toward Emily and Lily.“I know this does not undo what happened,” she said. “But I want the police report to state clearly that Lily was innocent from the beginning.”Emily swallowed hard.“Thank you.”Olivia looked at Lily.“And I want her to keep the flower basket. She was the bravest person here today.”Lily’s eyes widened a little.Ryan whispered, “This is insane.”Henry answered from behind him.“No, boy. This is consequence.”
