St. Anne's had not cleared Claire's staff locker.
Her supervisor could not explain why.
Administrative backlog, she said.
Eleanor considered it luck.

But inside Claire's notebook was a six digit number beside the words St. Anne's.
The locker opened.
Inside were shoes, a spare uniform, photographs of Sophie, and a children's book.

Eleanor almost overlooked it.
Then she remembered Claire used to read it to Sophie every night.
Inside the hollowed pages was a folded legal document.
The Special Succession Instrument of Richard Whitmore.
Martin read it twice.

This is the missing document.
Eleanor sat across from him.
