Daniel moved into Eleanor's estate with Sophie.
For twelve days, the mansion remained empty except for police and forensic technicians.
Vanessa was served with a temporary protective order.
Peter Sloan resigned from the board of Whitmore Development, citing health reasons.
Eleanor considered the timing an admission.
Martin Hayes disagreed.
It is suspicious, not proof.
Everything is suspicious.
That is the problem.
Eleanor spent hours reading Richard's old records.
Meridian Infrastructure appeared repeatedly.
Richard and Peter Sloan had founded a holding company called Morrow Continental in 1997.
Within eighteen months they were fighting.
Richard accused Sloan of using shell entities to hide debt.
Sloan accused Richard of stealing voting rights.
A lawsuit had been prepared but never filed.
Then Richard quietly bought Sloan out.
At least officially.
The settlement included a private addendum no one could locate.
Claire apparently believed the missing succession document was connected to that addendum.
Eleanor kept returning to one question.
Why Sophie.
Money alone did not explain the risks Vanessa had taken.
If the goal was control of Richard's dormant voting rights, someone needed Daniel legally disqualified or financially ruined.
Then Sophie's guardian could control the assets.
Vanessa had arranged for herself to become trustee under Daniel's will.
But Sophie would still remain Daniel's child while he lived.
Unless Daniel lost custody.
Or died.
Or voluntarily transferred authority.
That realization frightened Eleanor most.
She confronted him one evening.
Did Vanessa ever ask you to give her legal guardianship of Sophie.
Daniel said no.
Then he remembered.

She suggested a temporary parenting authorization.
Eleanor stared.

Signed six weeks earlier.
Vanessa Cole could make educational, medical, and temporary residential decisions for Sophie if Daniel was unavailable.
The document itself did not terminate Daniel's rights.
But combined with other documents, it created leverage.
Martin found another surprise.
Daniel had also signed a conditional share assignment.
If he defaulted on the East Harbor debt, his voting rights in Whitmore Development transferred temporarily to Northgate Advisory.
Vanessa's firm.
Daniel looked sick.
I did not understand this.
Martin stared at him.
Your signature is on every page.
Vanessa told me it was routine security.
Eleanor exploded.

Daniel flinched.
You read contracts for a living.

Then stop saying it.
Silence filled Martin's conference room.

That night Daniel asked Eleanor something unexpected.

He laughed once, bitterly.

Daniel looked at Richard's photograph.
