Chapter 11 - the trap vanessa prepared)

Sloan refused an interview.

His attorney insisted all questions go through counsel.

Vanessa did the same.

Whitmore Development's board placed Daniel on temporary leave while investigators reviewed the East Harbor financing.

That decision humiliated him.

Eleanor considered it necessary.

For the first time since Claire died, Daniel stopped drinking completely.

He attended meetings with an addiction counselor.

He spent his mornings with Sophie.

He stopped asking Eleanor to forgive him.

That, more than any apology, made her believe he might change.

Then Vanessa filed for enforcement of the parental authority document Daniel had signed.

Martin laughed when he read the petition.

She cannot seriously expect a court to give her access to Sophie.

She did not.

The filing had another purpose.

It forced Daniel's intoxication, debt, and parenting failures into public record.

Vanessa's attorney argued Daniel was incompetent.

If Daniel became legally incapacitated, Richard's succession instrument could activate.

Vanessa wanted exactly that.

But why trigger the instrument if it names me trustee, Eleanor asked.

Martin looked uneasy.

Unless Vanessa has another document.

A newer one.

Signed by Daniel.

They found it three days later.

Daniel had executed an amendment purporting to nominate Vanessa as Sophie's financial guardian.

He had signed it at a private dinner.

He remembered almost nothing.

The document might be invalid against Richard's succession instrument.

But litigation could delay control long enough for Sloan to complete the Meridian merger.

Every move had been calculated.

Eleanor decided to force Vanessa into making a mistake.

She instructed Martin to announce that the original succession document had not been found.

Then she privately leaked a false rumor through a board member.

The document was supposedly hidden at Daniel's mansion.

The mansion was placed under surveillance.

Two nights later, someone entered.

Not Vanessa.

Natalie.

Police detained her in Daniel's office.

She was carrying a flashlight and a set of copied keys.

Eleanor felt betrayed.

Natalie cried.

I had to.

Why.

Vanessa said if I did not find the document, Peter would destroy me too.

What does that mean.

Natalie refused to answer.

Reed searched her bag.

Inside was a burner phone.

Messages from Vanessa instructed her where to look.

Finally they had direct evidence of conspiracy.

Vanessa was arrested for violating the protective order and directing an unlawful entry.

This time she remained in custody.

But Peter Sloan disappeared.

His house was empty.

Private plane grounded.

Passport flagged.

No one knew where he went.

Eleanor thought the immediate danger had decreased.

She was wrong.

Vanessa was released on bond forty eight hours later.

That same afternoon, Daniel received a package.

Inside was Sophie's silver bracelet.

The original one Eleanor had stored in her safe.

The microchip was gone.

Someone had entered Eleanor's estate without leaving obvious evidence.

Alongside the bracelet was a note.

You protect the wrong things.

Eleanor doubled security.

She moved Sophie to a guest wing near her own bedroom.

Daniel insisted on sleeping outside the child's door.

Three days passed quietly.

Then Vanessa contacted Daniel from an unknown number.

You destroyed everything.

Daniel put the call on speaker while Reed recorded.

You destroyed it yourself, he said.

Vanessa laughed.

Do you really believe Claire loved you at the end.

Daniel's expression tightened.

Vanessa continued.

She was leaving you.

I know.

She was taking Sophie.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Maybe she should have.

Eleanor looked at him.

Vanessa seemed surprised by the answer.

Daniel continued.

I failed her.

Silence.

Then Vanessa said.

You still do not understand. Claire did not just find the trust documents. She changed something.

What.

She changed who receives control.

Martin shook his head urgently.

Daniel kept her talking.

To whom.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

Sophie does not inherit Meridian anymore.

Eleanor stared.

Who does.

Vanessa answered.

That is what Peter has been trying to discover.

The line went dead.

Martin immediately reviewed Claire's legal records.

Nothing.

Then he checked St. Anne's locker again.

The hollowed book contained a second seam in the binding.

Inside was a handwritten codicil.

Not legally sufficient on its own.

But it referenced another executed document.

Claire had apparently modified Sophie's succession structure with Richard's authorization before his death.

The beneficiary was described only as Protected Child B.

Daniel looked confused.

Who is Child B.

Eleanor thought of Claire's life.

Sophie was her only child.

At least everyone believed she was.

Then Rachel called.

Her voice trembled.

Eleanor, there is something Claire made me promise never to tell Daniel.

Eleanor sat down.

Tell me.

May you like

Rachel began crying.

Before Sophie, Claire had another baby.
