Chapter 9 - The Money Was Never Ryan's)

Claire replayed the sentence three times.

The original money was never mine.

Jessica stood behind her.

Daniel leaned closer to the laptop.

Ryan continued.

"My father gave me access to an account when I turned twenty-one. He told me it contained profits from Carter Hardware. That wasn't true."

Claire's pulse quickened.

Ryan looked into the camera.

"The money came from Thomas Vale."

Jessica whispered, "What?"

Ryan continued.

"Thomas told me he was my biological father."

Nobody in the room moved.

Jessica grabbed the back of a chair.

Ryan's recorded face tightened.

"I didn't believe him. Then he showed me letters from Mom."

Jessica sat down.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ryan said he had confronted Margaret.

She denied everything.

Then admitted Thomas had been part of her life before Charles.

Then denied he was Ryan's father.

Then demanded Ryan never tell Charles.

Ryan secretly obtained a DNA test.

Thomas Vale was his biological father.

Jessica began crying silently.

Claire reached for her.

Ryan continued.

"Thomas didn't want a relationship. He wanted leverage."

Thomas had spent decades threatening Margaret with exposure.

He demanded money.

At first Margaret used her own savings.

Then Carter Hardware money.

Then Ryan's money.

Ryan discovered the truth only after several unexplained withdrawals.

"I paid Thomas once," Ryan admitted. "Thirty thousand dollars. I thought it would end it."

It did not.

Thomas returned.

Margaret begged Ryan for more.

Ryan refused.

Then Ethan was born.

Ryan changed.

He transferred the remaining money Thomas had once placed in an account for him into Ethan's trust.

Not because he believed Thomas deserved to be part of Ethan's life.

Because Ryan wanted something destructive transformed into something useful.

Education.

Security.

A future.

"I told Mom she could never touch it."

Ryan looked exhausted.

"She said the money belonged to her because she had spent her life paying for my existence."

Claire closed her eyes.

Even through a recording, the sentence hurt.

Ryan continued.

"So I removed her as contingent trustee."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's consistent with the amendment."

Then Ryan said something that answered Margaret's accusation.

"I did not falsify Ethan's trust."

Claire exhaled.

"But Thomas may claim I did."

She tensed again.

Ryan explained.

Thomas had once signed documents declaring the original account a gift to Ryan.

Years later, after losing money, he began claiming the transfer had been temporary.

A loan.

Ryan had copies of the signed gift documents.

They were stored in the locker.

Daniel immediately began searching the folders.

He found them.

Signed.

Notarized.

Thomas Vale had transferred the money without repayment conditions.

Daniel leaned back.

"Margaret was bluffing."

Jessica wiped her face.

"Or Thomas is."

Claire watched the final part of the video.

Ryan's expression softened.

"Claire, if you're watching this, I'm sorry."

Her throat tightened.

"I should have told you."

He looked down.

"I kept thinking I could separate the family I grew up in from the family we built."

Claire began crying.

Ryan looked back into the camera.

"I was wrong."

Then he said something intended for Ethan.

"Buddy, if Mom ever shows you this when you're old enough, understand something. You don't owe anyone pain just because they share your blood."

Claire put a hand over her mouth.

Jessica sobbed.

Even Daniel looked away.

Ryan continued.

"Family is not a debt."

The recording ended.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan's voice came from the doorway.

"Can I see Dad?"

Claire turned.

He had been standing there.

She did not know how long.

"Ethan."

"Please."

Claire hesitated.

Then she moved aside.

Ethan sat in her chair.

Claire replayed only the final section.

Ryan appeared again.

Buddy.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Claire stood behind him with both hands on his shoulders.

Ryan's voice filled the room.

You don't owe anyone pain just because they share your blood.

Family is not a debt.

When the video ended, Ethan stared at the black screen.

Then he whispered, "He knew."

Claire crouched beside him.

"Knew what?"

"That Grandma makes people feel bad until they do what she wants."

Claire nodded slowly.

"I think he did."

Ethan looked toward the backyard.

"Did Dad hate her?"

"No."

"Then why did he hide everything?"

Claire thought carefully.

"Because loving someone and trusting them are not the same thing."

Ethan absorbed that.

"Can you love someone and not let them come to your house?"

Claire almost smiled through her tears.

"Yes."

"Good."

The phone rang.

Daniel looked at the caller ID.

Unknown number.

He answered on speaker.

"Daniel Brooks."

A man's voice replied.

"You're the attorney who opened Ryan Carter's locker."

Everyone went still.

Daniel's face changed.

"Who is this?"

"You know who."

Claire knew before he said it.

Thomas Vale.

Daniel asked, "What do you want?"

Thomas laughed softly.

"Margaret told me you've been digging through old ghosts."

Jessica stood.

"Put him on speaker."

Daniel already had.

Thomas continued.

"Tell Claire Carter that the money in her son's trust belongs to me."

Claire answered.

"No."

Silence.

Thomas said, "So you're there."

"Yes."

"You've been living on stolen money."

"The documents say otherwise."

"Documents can lie."

"So can people."

Thomas laughed again.

"Ryan had your temper."

Claire felt rage rise.

"You don't get to speak about him like you knew him."

"I knew enough."

"Then you know he wanted nothing to do with you."

Thomas's voice hardened.

"He owed me."

Claire looked at Ethan.

Then at Ryan's frozen image on the laptop.

Family is not a debt.

"No," Claire said. "He didn't."

Thomas was silent.

Then he replied.

"Margaret does."

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Jessica whispered, "Mom is still paying him."

Claire looked toward the documents.

"No."

Daniel understood.

"She's paying him with Ethan's trust."

Claire nodded.

May you like

And if Thomas had called because the payments stopped, then Margaret's missing forty-eight thousand dollars might not be the end of the problem.

It might be the beginning.
