Chapter 10 - Margaret's Last Bargain)

Margaret called Claire at seven the following morning.
Claire almost ignored it.
Daniel stopped her.
"Answer."
She put the call on speaker.
Margaret did not say hello.
"Thomas contacted you."
Claire looked at Daniel.
"Yes."
A pause.
"What did he say?"
"That you owe him."
Margaret breathed out.
"You don't understand."
"Then make me understand."
Silence.
Finally Margaret said, "Come to my house."
"No."
"Claire."
"No."
"I will explain everything."
"You can explain it here."
"I won't discuss this over the phone."
Claire almost ended the call.
Then Margaret said, "I have the original records Thomas wants."
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
"What records?"
Margaret heard him.
"Of course you're there."
"What records?" he repeated.
"The ones that prove he has no claim."
Daniel frowned.
"We already have the gift documents."
"Not those."
"What then?"
Margaret hesitated.
"His confession."
Jessica entered the room.
Claire looked at her.
"What confession?"
"Thomas recorded himself years ago. He admitted he had been blackmailing me."
Jessica went still.
Claire asked, "Why didn't you use it?"
"Because it would have exposed everything."
"Your affair."
Margaret did not answer.
Claire continued.
"Your marriage."
Still nothing.
"And Ryan."
Margaret finally spoke.
"Yes."
Jessica sat down.
Margaret's voice became quieter.
"I thought protecting the family mattered."
Claire looked at Ethan's empty breakfast chair.
"Protecting which family?"
"I did what I thought I had to."
"You stole from your grandson."
"I borrowed."
"No."
"I was going to replace it."
"With what?"
Margaret said nothing.
Claire's voice hardened.
"You tied Ethan to a table because he found out."
"I panicked."
"You broke your own phone and tried to frame him."
"I panicked."
"You tried to take Lily's watch."
"I panicked."
"You brought Ryan's papers to a grill."
Margaret's voice broke.
"I panicked."
Claire stopped.
It was the first time Margaret had sounded anything close to ashamed.
But shame did not erase consequences.
"Where is the confession?"
Margaret answered.
"Safe deposit box."
"What bank?"
"I'll tell you in person."
Daniel shook his head.
Claire said, "No."
"Then Thomas gets it first."
"How?"
"He knows where it is."
Daniel whispered, "Ask why he hasn't taken it."
Claire did.
Margaret answered immediately.
"Because he needs my key."
"And you need his?"
A pause.
"Yes."
Daniel mouthed, Two-key box.
Claire understood.
Some old safe deposit arrangements required both renter and bank-controlled access, but Margaret's explanation suggested something private.
Margaret continued.
"He'll meet me today."
"No."
"You don't control me."
"No, but you are not taking Ethan's money to him."
"I'm not."
"Why should I believe you?"
Margaret's answer surprised everyone.
"You shouldn't."
Claire went silent.
Margaret continued.
"That's why I'm asking you to come."
Jessica leaned toward the speaker.
"I'm coming too."
Margaret inhaled sharply.
"Jessica."
"Yes."
"I didn't want you involved."
"You used my tuition as an excuse to steal money from Ryan."
"Jessica."
"You made me part of it years ago."
Margaret sounded tired.
"Fine."
They agreed to meet at Carter Hardware at noon.
Daniel insisted they contact local authorities first.
Claire resisted.
"I don't want Ethan dragged through an investigation."
"He already is involved."
That was the truth she hated most.
Ultimately, they provided the smartwatch recording, photographs of the rope, the transaction records, and Ryan's documents to an investigator.
Claire did not know what would happen next.
She only knew that she would never again hide a family problem merely because exposing it might embarrass someone.
At eleven forty-five, Claire, Jessica, and Daniel parked across from Carter Hardware.
Margaret arrived five minutes later.
At noon exactly, a black sedan pulled behind the building.
Thomas Vale stepped out.
He was taller than Claire expected.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
Expensively dressed.
He looked less like a villain than an aging businessman.
That somehow made him more unsettling.
Margaret stood beneath the faded Carter Hardware sign.
Thomas smiled.
"Still dramatic."
Margaret did not respond.
He looked toward Claire.
"Ryan's widow."
"Claire."
"I know."
Jessica stepped forward.
Thomas looked at her.
"You must be Jessica."
She stared at him with disgust.
"You don't get to say my name."
Thomas laughed softly.
"Margaret raised two emotional children."
Jessica moved toward him.
Claire caught her arm.
Thomas looked amused.
"Where's the key?"
Margaret asked.
"Where's the money?"
Claire stared at her.
"You said there was no money."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Thomas smiled.
"There is always money."
Daniel stepped forward.
"If this meeting involves a demand for funds from Ethan Carter's trust, I recommend everyone stop speaking."
Thomas looked at him.
"And you are?"
"The attorney who has copies of your signed gift transfer."
Thomas's smile faded slightly.
"So Ryan kept them."
"He kept everything."
Margaret whispered, "Not everything."
Thomas looked at her.
She held up a brass key.
His eyes changed.
"The box."
"Yes."
Thomas reached inside his coat.
Claire stiffened.
He removed another key.
Margaret stared at it.
For decades, these two people had been connected by secrets, money, fear, and resentment.
Now they stood ten feet apart.
Thomas smiled.
"One last payment."
"No," Margaret said.
His smile disappeared.
"You don't get to decide when this ends."
"For forty years, you've said that."
"And for forty years, you've paid."
Margaret's voice trembled.
"Not anymore."
Thomas glanced at Claire.
"Your mother-in-law is performing for you."
Margaret looked at him.
Then she said the last thing Claire expected.
"I already told them everything."
Thomas froze.
Margaret continued.
"And the bank knows."
His expression changed.
"You stupid woman."
"I should have done it thirty-six years ago."
Thomas stepped closer.
"You think confession saves you?"
"No."
Margaret looked toward Claire.
"For once, I'm not trying to save myself."
Claire did not know whether to believe her.
Thomas did.
Because he panicked.
He grabbed Margaret's wrist.
The brass key fell.
Jessica shouted.
Daniel moved forward.
And from the alley behind them came a voice.
"Thomas Vale, step away from her."
Thomas turned.
Two investigators stood beside the rear entrance.
May you like
For the first time in decades, Margaret Carter stopped protecting her secret.
And Thomas Vale realized the secret no longer protected him.
