Chapter 14 - Thomas Comes for the Last Secret)

Margaret called Claire immediately.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Jessica tried.
Still nothing.
Margaret's fear became physical.
She drove faster than she should have.
Jessica followed in another car.
By the time they reached Claire's street, a police vehicle was already parked outside.
Margaret almost could not breathe.
Claire stood on the porch.
Safe.
Ethan stood behind her.
Safe.
Lily was not there.
Margaret rushed from the car.
"What happened?"
Claire looked at her.
"Thomas came here."
Margaret stopped.
"Is Ethan okay?"
"Yes."
Ethan stared through the doorway.
Claire continued.
"He never got inside."
"What did he want?"
"The blue box."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Of course.
Ryan's files.
The one thing Thomas still feared.
Claire held up her phone.
"Doorbell camera recorded him."
Thomas had arrived at 2:16 p.m.
He knocked.
Claire saw him through the camera and did not open the door.
He claimed he wanted to talk.
Then he demanded Ryan's documents.
When Claire refused, he threatened to "correct the story" publicly.
Claire called police.
Thomas left before they arrived.
Margaret whispered, "I'm sorry."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Don't."
"I brought him into this family."
"You did."
Margaret flinched.
Claire continued.
"But Thomas made his own choices."
Margaret looked at Ethan.
"And I made mine."
"Yes."
No absolution.
No cruelty.
Just truth.
Daniel arrived thirty minutes later.
He had more news.
Thomas had not merely missed court.
Investigators believed he was preparing to leave the state.
His attorney had withdrawn.
Several old payment demands had become part of the investigation.
The situation had moved beyond the Carter trust.
Claire asked, "What does he want with Ryan's documents?"
Daniel answered.
"Probably to destroy evidence."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
Everyone turned.
"What?" Claire asked.
Margaret looked toward the blue box on the dining table.
"He wants the last letter."
Claire frowned.
"What last letter?"
Margaret sat down.
"Thomas wrote Ryan after Charles died."
Jessica stared at her.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"What did it say?"
Margaret looked at Ethan.
"Not in front of him."
Ethan immediately spoke.
"It's about Dad."
Claire hesitated.
Then said, "He stays."
Margaret nodded.
"Thomas told Ryan he wanted to meet him."
Ethan watched her.
"Did Dad go?"
"Yes."
Claire had never known.
Margaret continued.
"They met at Carter Hardware."
"What happened?"
"Ryan recorded it."
Daniel looked alarmed.
"We didn't find another recording."
Margaret nodded.
"Because Ryan gave it to me."
Claire stared.
"Why?"
"He said if Thomas ever came after Ethan, I should use it."
Jessica laughed bitterly.
"So Ryan trusted you with the one thing designed to protect his son?"
Margaret's face twisted.
"He wanted to believe I'd do the right thing."
"Where is it?"
Margaret did not answer.
"Mom."
"I hid it."
"Where?"
"In Charles's grave."
Everyone went silent.
Jessica stared.
"You buried evidence with Dad?"
Margaret nodded.
"Inside the memorial box beneath the headstone."
Claire could barely process it.
"Why?"
"Because Thomas knew every place I kept documents."
Daniel stood.
"We need to retrieve it."
Margaret shook her head.
"Not tonight."
"Why?"
"The cemetery gates close."
Claire looked at the clock.
4:42 p.m.
They had time.
Margaret's face was pale.
"He'll know."
"How?"
Margaret whispered, "Because he's the one who told me to hide things in graves when we were young."
Daniel stared at her.
"You think Thomas may already be going there."
Margaret nodded.
Claire grabbed her keys.
"No."
Daniel stopped her.
"You're staying with Ethan."
"I'm not hiding."
"This isn't about hiding. It's about not bringing a child into an active confrontation."
Claire looked at Ethan.
He spoke before she could.
"Stay."
Claire looked down.
He tried to smile.
"Grandma's not the only person who can go."
Margaret flinched at the word Grandma.
Jessica and Daniel left with investigators.
Margaret remained.
Claire did not want her there.
Ethan surprised them both.
"She can stay."
Claire looked at him.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
That answer was painfully honest.
"But I don't want her driving around if Thomas is out there."
Margaret's eyes filled.
They waited in the living room.
No one knew what to say.
Finally Ethan asked Margaret, "Why did Dad give you the recording?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Because he still loved me."
"Even after everything?"
"Yes."
"Did that mean he trusted you?"
"No."
Ethan nodded slowly.
Margaret continued.
"He wanted to."
Ethan stared at her.
"Do you want me to trust you?"
"Very much."
"Do I have to?"
Margaret swallowed.
"No."
"Good."
She almost smiled.
Then Ethan said, "Maybe someday."
Margaret's face crumpled.
Claire watched her.
It was the first gift Ethan had offered.
Not forgiveness.
Not trust.
Possibility.
Margaret understood enough not to grab it.
At 6:11 p.m., Daniel called.
They found the memorial box.
They found the recording.
And they found Thomas.
He had arrived minutes before them.
He was taken into custody after attempting to remove the box.
But Daniel's voice remained tense.
"Claire, there's something on the recording you need to hear."
"What?"
"Ryan asked Thomas one question."
"What question?"
"Why he kept coming back."
Claire looked at Ethan.
"And?"
Daniel exhaled.
"Thomas answered."
That night, Daniel brought the recovered recorder to Claire's house.
Everyone gathered around the dining table.
Even Margaret.
Ryan's voice came first.
"Why won't you leave us alone?"
Thomas replied.
"Because every time I look at you, I see the life I could've had."
Ryan said, "You didn't want me."
Thomas laughed.
"No. I wanted your mother to choose me."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Thomas continued.
"She chose Charles. So Charles paid. Then you paid. Now your boy will pay."
Ryan's voice became cold.
"No."
Thomas laughed.
"You can't stop me forever."
Ryan answered with four words.
"I don't need forever."
The recording clicked off.
Claire stared at the machine.
Ryan had been right.
May you like
He had not needed forever.
He had only needed to leave enough truth behind for his family to finally stop paying.
