Chapter 5 - Claire Makes a Choice)

The recording ended.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Claire's hand was still wrapped around Lily's wrist, not tightly, but protectively.
Ethan sat beside her on the picnic bench.
Margaret stood alone in the middle of the lawn.
The blue document box rested beside the barbecue grill.
Claire noticed it.
"So you brought Ryan's papers outside."
Margaret folded her arms.
"I was organizing them."
"Beside the grill?"
Margaret hesitated.
"I changed my mind."
Claire walked toward the box.
Margaret stepped in front of her.
"Those documents are private."
Claire looked at her.
"Move."
"Claire."
"Move."
Margaret did not.
Claire took out her phone.
Margaret's confidence returned slightly.
"Who are you calling?"
"Someone who can tell me whether I should call the police first or the bank."
That worked.
Margaret moved.
Claire picked up the transaction page.
She recognized the bank logo immediately.
Carter Family Trust.
Beneficiary Ethan Ryan Carter.
Transaction history.
Her eyes moved down the list.
Five withdrawals.
Then six.
Then eight.
The total made her stomach turn.
Forty-eight thousand dollars.
Receiving account.
Margaret A. Carter.
Claire looked up.
Margaret spoke quickly.
"Those transactions were authorized."
"By whom?"
"Ryan."
"Ryan has been dead three years."
"The original arrangement gave me access."
"No, it didn't."
"You don't know what Ryan and I discussed."
"I know what his trust says."
Margaret gave a bitter laugh.
"You think marriage made you understand my son better than his mother did?"
Claire stared at her.
"This is not about who loved Ryan more."
"It always is with you."
"No. This is about money missing from Ethan's account."
"I used it for family expenses."
"Whose family?"
Margaret did not answer.
Claire continued.
"My mortgage isn't paid from that trust."
Silence.
"Ethan's school isn't paid from that trust."
Margaret looked away.
"His medical bills aren't paid from that trust."
Still nothing.
"So what family expenses?"
Margaret's face hardened.
"I needed help."
"Then you ask."
"I shouldn't have to beg for money my own son earned."
Claire stared at her.
There it was.
Not shame.
Not denial.
Entitlement.
"Ryan didn't leave that money to you."
"He would have."
"But he didn't."
Margaret stepped closer.
"He made decisions while he was sick."
"He wasn't sick when he signed the trust."
"You controlled him."
Ethan stiffened.
Claire noticed.
She forced herself not to raise her voice.
"Go inside with Lily."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"Ethan."
"I want to stay."
Claire knelt.
She looked into his face.
"This isn't because you've done anything wrong."
"I know."
"Then trust me."
He hesitated.
Lily took his hand.
"Come on."
They walked toward the screen door.
Before Ethan entered, he turned.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"I didn't break her phone."
Claire's eyes burned.
"I know."
He nodded.
Then disappeared inside.
Claire waited until the door closed.
Margaret exhaled.
"Finally."
Claire stared at her.
"You tied him up because he discovered the withdrawals."
"I tied him because he tried to run into the street."
"He tried to leave your yard."
"He's a child."
"He was trying to get away from you."
Margaret shook her head.
"You will twist anything."
Claire lifted Lily's watch.
"There is a recording."
"A child's recording taken out of context."
"It records you breaking your own phone."
Margaret's mouth tightened.
Claire continued.
"It records you demanding Ethan take the blame."
"You know what? Fine. I lost my temper."
"You tied him to a table."
"I made a mistake."
"You tried to destroy Ryan's documents."
"I was not destroying them."
"Then why were they beside an open grill?"
Margaret said nothing.
Claire pulled her phone from her pocket.
"I'm calling Jessica."
Margaret looked alarmed.
"Why?"
"Lily is her daughter."
"Don't drag Jessica into this."
"Her seven-year-old just ran to a neighbor for help because she was scared of you."
"She misunderstood."
Claire dialed.
Jessica answered on the second ring.
"Claire?"
"Come to your mother's house."
"Why?"
"Now."
Something in Claire's voice made Jessica stop asking questions.
"I'll be there."
Claire ended the call.
Next she called Daniel Brooks.
Ryan's estate attorney.
He answered after four rings.
"Claire?"
"I need you to tell me something."
"Okay."
"Did Margaret Carter ever have legal access to Ethan's trust?"
A pause.
"Why?"
"Daniel."
"No."
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
"Margaret was listed as a contingent trustee only if both you and Ryan were unable to serve. Ryan removed even that provision in the final amendment."
"When?"
"Four months before he died."
Claire looked at Margaret.
Margaret stared at the ground.
"Why did he remove her?"
Another pause.
"Claire, I think we need to speak in person."
Her pulse quickened.
"Why?"
"Because Ryan asked me to keep something sealed unless Margaret tried to access Ethan's funds."
Claire's grip tightened around the phone.
Margaret's head snapped up.
"What did he say?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"He left you a letter."
Claire stopped breathing.
"A letter?"
"Yes."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Hang up."
Claire moved away.
Daniel continued.
"And there is something else."
"What?"
"Ryan believed his mother had already taken money from him once before."
Margaret's expression collapsed.
Claire stared at her.
"How much?"
May you like
Daniel's reply came after a long silence.
"More than forty-eight thousand."
