Chapter 6 - sarah did not scream

Sarah Hart realized the federal agent outside Tyler's room had been replaced because the new man wore the wrong shoes.
The first agent had black leather dress shoes.
This man wore tactical boots.
Tiny detail.
Jack would have noticed sooner.
Sarah noticed soon enough.
She was sitting beside Tyler when the man opened the door.
"Mrs. Hart, we need to move your son."
Sarah stood.
"Why?"
"Security concern."
"Where is Agent Liu?"
"Reassigned."
Tyler opened his eyes.
Sarah moved closer to the bed.
"Show me your credentials."
The man smiled.
"Ma'am."
"Show me."
A second man appeared behind him.
Sarah reached for the nurse-call button.
The first man grabbed her wrist.
Tyler shouted.
Sarah did not scream.
She picked up a metal water pitcher and smashed it into the man's face.
The second man rushed inside.
Tyler reached toward the IV stand and shoved it across the room.
The wheels struck the attacker's knees.
For ten seconds, the hospital room became chaos.
Sarah reached the alarm.
The man caught her.
Tyler shouted, "Mom."
She twisted hard and bit the man's hand.
He cursed.
Then a third figure appeared.
Sarah expected another attacker.
Instead, Deputy Cole Mercer's wife, Megan, slammed a fire extinguisher into the second man's shoulder.
Megan had arrived fifteen minutes earlier with Lily after Elena ordered family protection.
The attacker fell.
The first man reached inside his jacket.
Megan sprayed the extinguisher directly into his face.
Hospital staff began shouting in the corridor.
Security alarms sounded.
The men fled.
Sarah immediately locked the door.
Tyler stared at her.
"Mom."
She was breathing hard.
"Are you okay?"
"You hit him with a pitcher."
"He touched me."
Tyler almost laughed.
It hurt his ribs.
"You're terrifying."
"Good."
Five minutes later, Jack arrived.
He crossed the room and wrapped both arms around Sarah.
She held him just as tightly.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Jack pulled back.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Tyler?"
"I'm fine," Tyler said.
Jack looked at the bent IV stand.
Then the extinguisher foam.
Then Megan.
"What happened?"
Sarah answered.
"We handled it."
Despite everything, Jack smiled.
Cole entered behind him and ran to Megan.
Their daughter Lily clung to his leg.
Cole knelt and hugged her.
Megan whispered something Jack could not hear.
Cole lowered his head.
Elena arrived minutes later.
Her mood was not relieved.
It was furious.
"The fake agents had authentic credentials."
Jack looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"Somebody inside federal law enforcement issued them."
Cole swore.
Elena nodded.
"The leak is bigger than we thought."
Jack looked at Tyler.
Rourke had said Tyler recorded more than he realized.
Jack sat beside the bed.
"Tyler, when you started recording, what app did you use?"
"Voice recorder."
"Does it automatically sync?"
Tyler blinked.
"Cloud backup."
Cole looked at him.
"I checked. Nothing was there."
"Because my storage was full."
Jack frowned.
Tyler continued.
"But I had a developer app running earlier."
"For what?"
"I was testing an audio-filter project."
Sarah stared.
"In English, please."
Tyler looked at Jack.
"My phone had been buffering microphone data for about thirty minutes before I pressed record."
Cole stepped closer.
"So it might have captured the conversation before Barnes noticed you?"
"Maybe."
"Where would it save?"
"My laptop."
Jack looked at Sarah.
Tyler's laptop was at home.
Elena said, "Nobody goes near that house until it's cleared."
Jack agreed.
For once.
A federal tactical team reached the Hart home at midnight.
Nothing moved inside.
No explosives.
No attackers.
But Tyler's laptop was gone.
Jack stared at the empty spot on Tyler's desk.
Sarah whispered, "Rourke."
Tyler's gaming monitor remained.
Books.
Headphones.
Cables.
Only the laptop missing.
Jack examined the room.
Window locked.
Door untouched.
Whoever took it used a key.
Sarah realized at the same moment.
"The spare."
They kept one spare house key in Jack's courthouse maintenance locker.
Cole said, "Barnes had access to county employee lockers."
Jack nodded.
Elena looked around.
"If Rourke already has the laptop, why tell Jack to meet him?"
Tyler answered from the secure video call displayed on Sarah's phone.
"Because he can't open it."
Everyone looked at the screen.
Tyler smiled weakly.
"My laptop is encrypted."
Jack almost laughed.
"Good boy."
"Password?"
Tyler shook his head.
"Hardware key."
"Where?"
Tyler pointed through the screen.
"Red toolbox under my bed."
Jack pulled it out.
Inside were screwdrivers, circuit boards, and loose cables.
No obvious key.
Tyler said, "Bottom panel."
Jack removed it.
A small USB security key was taped underneath.
Elena stared.
"So Rourke needs that."
Tyler nodded.
"Without it, the encrypted partition wipes after ten failed attempts."
Cole smiled.
"How many attempts do they get?"
"Ten."
Jack looked toward Elena.
"That's why he needs me."
Elena nodded.
"And why he hasn't simply killed you."
Jack pocketed the hardware key.
Sarah stared at him.
"No."
"Sarah."
"No."
"He wants the key."
"Then give it to Elena."
"If we hand it to federal custody, the leak gives it to Rourke."
Elena did not object.
Because he was right.
Cole said, "We need the laptop and the key in the same place."
Jack looked at him.
"The rail yard."
Elena crossed her arms.
"It's still an obvious trap."
"Yes."
"And your plan is?"
"Walk into it."
Sarah stepped in front of him.
"I thought we discussed you not becoming a weapon."
Jack touched her face gently.
"I'm not."
"Then what are you?"
He looked at Tyler's hardware key.
"Bait."
Sarah closed her eyes.
She hated that answer.
But she understood it.
Elena began planning.
Federal agents could surround the rail yard, but only a small circle would know.
No electronic briefings.
No shared dispatch.
No county police.
Cole would accompany Jack.
Elena would command the outer team.
Sarah and Tyler would remain at a secure medical facility outside Mill Creek.
At 10:55 the following night, Jack stood beside Cole beneath the old rail yard's rusted loading tower.
Rain fell across abandoned tracks.
The place looked dead.
It was not.
Jack saw movement in the shadows.
Professional security.
At least eight.
Cole whispered, "You see them?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"Enough."
At exactly 11:30, a light appeared inside the largest freight building.
Then a speaker crackled.
Daniel Rourke's voice echoed across the yard.
"Come inside, Jack."
Cole looked at him.
Jack removed his jacket.
No visible weapon.
The hardware key hung around his neck.
"Stay behind me."
Cole almost laughed.
"I'm the deputy."
"Tonight you're the witness."
They entered.
Inside, Sheriff Rick Barnes sat tied to a chair.
His face was bruised.
His uniform was gone.
Nathan Webb's body lay beneath a white sheet ten feet away.
And Daniel Rourke stood beside Tyler's open laptop.
Alive.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
But unmistakably the same man Jack had buried in his memory twenty years earlier.
Rourke smiled.
"Hello, Sergeant."
Jack stopped.
Barnes looked at him desperately.
"He's going to kill all of us."
Rourke sighed.
"Rick, don't be dramatic."
Jack stared at his former commander.
"You ordered my son killed."
Rourke's smile faded.
"No."
Jack's eyes narrowed.
"I heard you."
"You heard a sentence."
"Tyler heard too much. Kill him."
Rourke nodded.
"Correct."
"Then don't play games."
Rourke placed one hand on Tyler's laptop.
"I wasn't talking about Tyler."
Jack went still.
Cole stared.
Barnes began shaking his head.
Rourke looked toward the covered body.
"I was talking about Nathan Webb."
Jack's mind raced.
The recording.
Barnes had said nobody else heard him.
Rourke answered Tyler heard too much. Kill him.
What if Tyler was not a name?
What if Barnes had said something else?
Rourke smiled.
"Your son's recording was edited."
Jack slowly turned toward Barnes.
Barnes looked terrified.
And suddenly Jack understood.
May you like
Sheriff Rick Barnes had not merely tried to destroy Tyler's phone.
He had changed what was on it first.
