Chapter 11 - lake bell

Rain turned the roads around Lake Bell into black rivers.

Federal vehicles approached without sirens.

No county frequencies.

No state police channels.

Elena trusted only seven agents.

Cole came because he knew the building.

Jack came because Daniel Rourke wanted him there.

Sarah hated it.

Tyler understood.

Before Jack disconnected the call, his son said one thing.

"Bring him back alive."

Jack looked at the screen.

"Why?"

"So he has to hear the verdict."

Jack smiled.

"That's my boy."

The water-treatment plant rose beside the lake like a concrete fortress.

Blackridge trucks surrounded it.

But most were leaving.

Rourke was evacuating.

Elena studied aerial images.

"Main gate has twelve armed guards."

Jack pointed toward the lake.

"Intake tunnel."

Cole frowned.

"Underwater?"

"Partially."

"You've been here before?"

"Repaired filtration pumps three years ago."

Cole shook his head.

"Janitor."

"Maintenance technician."

"Sorry."

They entered through a drainage culvert.

Cold water reached their knees.

Jack led.

Elena followed with two agents.

Cole behind her.

At the interior gate, Jack opened a rusted service panel and bypassed the lock.

Elena stared.

"Anything you can't fix?"

"My dishwasher."

They moved inside.

The plant echoed with machinery.

Emergency generators powered the control level.

Voices above.

Jack counted.

Six.

Then another sound.

Barnes.

Arguing.

They climbed.

Through a window, they saw Rourke standing beside a steel case.

The Book.

Barnes stood nearby, hands zip-tied.

Rourke had recovered him from the courthouse before federal agents arrived.

Barnes shouted, "I gave you twenty years."

"You stole thirteen million dollars."

"I earned it."

Rourke looked bored.

"You murdered Webb without authorization."

"He was talking."

"You shot Jack Hart's son."

"He was recording me."

"And then you edited my voice to make it sound as though I ordered the boy's death."

Barnes said nothing.

Rourke's expression hardened.

"That offended me."

Barnes laughed.

"Your feelings are hurt?"

"No."

Rourke picked up his pistol.

"My reputation."

Jack stepped into the doorway.

"Put it down."

Rourke turned.

No surprise.

He had expected him.

"Jack."

Barnes looked relieved.

"Thank God."

Jack looked at him.

"Don't."

Barnes shut his mouth.

Elena and agents appeared from separate entrances.

Weapons raised.

"Daniel Rourke," Elena called. "Step away from the case."

Rourke smiled.

"Counselor."

"It's over."

"No."

He pressed a remote.

Steel blast doors dropped between Elena's team and the control room.

Jack was trapped inside.

With Rourke and Barnes.

Cole shouted from behind the barrier.

Jack heard him pounding.

Rourke placed the pistol on the console.

"Now we can talk."

Jack looked toward Barnes.

"Release him."

Rourke laughed.

"You really want to save Rick?"

"I want him convicted."

"Still clinging to courts."

"Still afraid of them?"

That landed.

Rourke looked at him.

"You think prison frightens me?"

"No."

"What does?"

Jack glanced toward the steel case.

"Being known."

Rourke's smile vanished.

Jack continued.

"You built your life around secrecy. Invisible contracts. dead teams. shell companies. buried names."

He took one step closer.

"Mason recorded everything."

Rourke went still.

Jack saw it.

Real fear.

"The drive survived."

"No."

"Tyler opened it."

Rourke's face changed completely.

For the first time, Daniel Rourke looked old.

Jack continued.

"Elena has copies."

Rourke stared at the blast doors.

Then at Jack.

"You lied."

"No."

Rourke grabbed the pistol.

Barnes ducked.

Jack moved sideways.

Rourke did not aim at Jack.

He aimed at the control console.

Three shots.

Sparks erupted.

Alarms sounded.

A mechanical voice announced pressure failure.

Cole shouted behind the barrier.

"What did he do?"

Barnes went pale.

"The intake gates."

Jack looked at him.

"What?"

"If they open fully, this level floods."

Rourke grabbed the steel case.

Jack blocked him.

"You won't make it."

"I don't need to."

Water thundered somewhere below.

The building shook.

Rourke swung the case at Jack.

Jack ducked.

Barnes ran toward the blast door controls.

Locked.

Water began rushing under the far doorway.

Rourke attacked.

This time there was no measured sparring.

He was desperate.

Jack took a blow to the ribs.

Rourke drove him against the console.

"You should have died with Mason."

Jack hit him.

"You first."

Rourke struck back.

Barnes shouted as water reached his ankles.

"Stop fighting and open the door."

Neither listened.

Rourke grabbed Jack by the throat.

"You could have had everything."

Jack forced his arm away.

"I did."

Rourke hesitated.

Jack drove him backward.

"A wife who loves me."

Another strike.

"A son who trusts me."

Rourke stumbled.

"A home."

Jack knocked the pistol away.

"That's everything."

Water reached their knees.

Rourke stared at him.

For the first time, Jack saw what Rourke actually envied.

Not Jack's skills.

Not his survival.

His peace.

Rourke had spent decades building power because he had never understood how to build a life.

The ceiling alarm screamed.

Barnes slipped and fell.

"Help."

Jack ignored Rourke and moved toward Barnes.

Rourke stared in disbelief.

"You're saving him?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Jack pulled Barnes upright.

"Because I'm not you."

Rourke lunged for the fallen pistol.

Barnes saw it first.

He kicked the weapon away.

Rourke stared at him.

Barnes laughed breathlessly.

"Guess I'm not you either."

Jack almost smiled.

Behind the blast door, Cole found a manual release.

The door rose six inches.

Water rushed through.

Elena shouted.

"Jack."

Jack pushed Barnes toward the gap.

"Go."

Barnes crawled under.

Rourke grabbed the steel case and headed for an upper catwalk.

Jack followed.

Not to kill him.

To stop the Book from disappearing.

They climbed as water filled the control room.

Rourke reached a rooftop service door.

Jack tackled him before he could open it.

The steel case slid across the wet catwalk.

It struck the railing.

Opened.

Pages scattered.

Names.

Signatures.

Blackridge secrets flying through rain and spray.

Rourke screamed.

Not from pain.

From seeing his invisible empire become paper in the open.

He reached for the pages.

Jack grabbed him.

Rourke swung wildly.

The railing broke.

Rourke slipped.

For one second he hung over rushing water twenty feet below.

Jack caught his wrist.

Rourke stared up.

"Let me go."

Jack tightened his grip.

"No."

"Why?"

"Tyler wants you alive."

Rourke laughed once.

Even then.

Jack pulled him up with Cole's help.

Elena placed handcuffs around Daniel Rourke's wrists.

Rourke looked at Jack.

"All those years, and this is what you became?"

Jack looked toward the arriving dawn beyond Lake Bell.

"Yes."

Rourke waited for shame.

There was none.

May you like

Jack smiled.

"I'm proud of it."
