Chapter 5 - The Signature Under the Lace

By dawn, every Robles account connected to the investigation had been frozen.
Javier was detained in the Orsino Hotel garage while attempting to leave in a catering van.
Carmen escaped.
The two women from the suite disappeared through the service tunnels beneath the hotel. Investigators recovered their discarded uniforms near a loading dock but found no fingerprints.
Sofia refused to return to the hospital after a doctor confirmed she could recover at home.
She wanted answers.
Agent Mercer set up a temporary command center in Elena’s dining room. Laptops covered the long table. Photographs of the hotel appeared on three portable screens.
Alexander removed his ceremonial jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
The white uniform beneath made him look like a man who had stepped out of one war and entered another.
Sofia sat across from him.
“You knew the Robles family was under investigation.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Eight months.”
“And you let me marry Javier?”
Alexander looked down.
“I did not know he was targeting you until three weeks ago.”
“You still said nothing.”
“We had suspicions, not proof.”
“I was proof.”
Elena stood near the window.
“Alexander was ordered not to interfere.”
Sofia turned sharply.
“You knew?”
“I knew he was investigating financial crimes connected to the Robles family. I did not know you were part of it.”
Alexander placed a folder in front of Sofia.
“Javier’s companies borrowed money against properties they did not legally own. When lenders began discovering the fraud, he needed a valuable asset with a clean title.”
“My condo.”
“Not only the condo.”
Alexander opened the folder.
The building had been constructed by Sofia’s grandfather through a company called Serrano Meridian Holdings. Most of its original financial records disappeared after his death.
One page contained a list of secure storage spaces built into five properties.
Four had been opened years ago.
The fifth was located inside Sofia’s condo.
“The hidden room,” Sofia said.
Mercer nodded. “We believe it contains records connected to an account called Meridian Seven.”
“What is in the account?”
“We do not know. But Carmen’s earliest companies received unexplained payments from it.”
Sofia looked toward Elena.
“Did my mother know?”
Elena sat beside her.
“Luciana discovered something shortly before she died. She told me our father had hidden evidence in the condo, but she never said what it was.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because two days later, her car went off the river road.”
Sofia’s eyes burned.
“The voice in the suite said it was not an accident.”
Elena reached for her hand.
Sofia pulled away.
“Did you believe it was?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Alexander looked at his sister.
“You told me Luciana lost control in the rain.”
“I told you what the police report said.”
“You knew there was more.”
“I suspected our father’s business partners.”
“Carmen?”
“Among others.”
Sofia stood.
“You both spent years protecting me with silence. All it did was leave me unprepared.”
She walked toward the hallway.
Her wedding gown had been placed inside a protective bag near the stairs. As she passed it, something beneath the lace caught the light.
A thin strip of silver.
Sofia stopped.
The bodice had torn during the struggle. Sewn inside the inner seam was a small metal object.
Mercer put on gloves and removed it.
It was a memory card.
Elena stared at the dress.
“Who altered the gown?”
“The designer’s assistant delivered it yesterday,” Sofia said.
Mercer inserted the card into an isolated computer.
A single video file appeared.
The footage showed Luciana Serrano sitting in the condo study.
She looked younger than Sofia remembered her, but fear had sharpened her features.
The recording date was three days before her death.
“If Sofia is watching this,” Luciana said, “then Carmen has finally come for the apartment.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
Luciana looked directly into the camera.
“Do not trust the person who brings you to the hidden room. Do not trust the first voice you recognize. And whatever happens, never sign the property to a Robles.”
The image flickered.
Luciana leaned closer.
“Elena, if you kept your promise, my daughter will still have the brass key.”
Elena began to cry silently.
Luciana continued.
“The room does not open with the key alone. It opens with a Serrano signature and the voice of the third daughter.”
The video froze.
Then another file appeared automatically.
It contained a scanned document bearing Sofia’s signature.
The property transfer.
Not Luciana’s name, which Sofia had written in the suite.
Her real signature.
Perfectly copied.
Mercer examined the timestamp.

The forged deed had been registered eighteen minutes earlier.
Someone had transferred half the condo to Javier while he was already in federal custody.
